Skills may pay the bills, but relationships will make you rich. This is the second lesson in my 30 Things I Learned by the Time I Turn 30 series! While you need a base set of skills for any career path, what I've seen time and time again is that those who can cultivate relationships and maintain them over time get incredible outcomes versus those who just focus on learning more hard skills. A lot of times your positioning is more important than your proficiency. If you can network your way into a high-growth startup or a team with a larger budget, that may have a much greater impact on your compensation than your list of skills, even in more technical fields. I'm very embarrassed to share this, but this is one of the first viral videos I posted on TikTok. With the TikTok ban going into effect today, I wanted to take a trip down memory lane. TikTok was the first platform I ever posted content on. I started by posting fitness and motivational content that nobody cared about but one day I posted a "day in the life" video of my job in consulting and for some reason, people kept asking for more. Four years later I am a full-time creator, making more than I ever had at my previous jobs, all because I believed in the value of creating a space online that could provide the sort of guidance and community I wish I had at the start of my career. Here's how to make your next networking interaction a lot more interesting. First things first, never ever start a conversation with: "what do you do for work?" ever again. Instead, try one of these three things: 1️⃣ Give them a compliment that shows you're paying attention and to make them instantly more approachable. 2️⃣ Join a moment or an occasion that's already happening, for example, walk up to the snack table and ask someone if those burger bites taste as good as they look. 3️⃣ Bring them into an occasion of your own. Ask someone for their thoughts on a decision you've got to make soon, or a soft argument you're having with a friend or spouse. It's super fun!
