Thank you, Kavvi from LUNA LUNA for sharing his favorite Fania tracks with us!

"When I was growing up as a first Gen Latino in Dallas, Texas, Fania’s music was inescapable . Growing up in a Colombian household listening and dancing to salsa music was a weekly tradition. The music of artists like Hector Lavoe, Willie Colon, and Celia Cruz helped to exponentially grow my love for music. Having this Latin music to listen to while growing up in the states helped me stay in touch with my roots. These Fania artists have motivated me to making sure that LunaLuna always wears our heritage on our sleeves to help inspire the next generation of Latinos growing up in America." - Kavvi González, Luna Luna

In the ’70s, Celia Cruz signed to Fania, where she released some of her most successful titles, performed alongside many of her iconic labelmates. One such peer was Willie Colón. Their 1981 collaboration titled CELIA Y WILLIE marked the second album by Cruz and Colón, a highly successful partnership between the “Queen of Salsa” and “El Malo del Bronx.”

writes that a Cruz/Colón collaboration “is to salseros what a Marvin Gaye/Tammi Terrell duet is to soul lovers or an Ella Fitzgerald/Louis Armstrong project is to jazz enthusiasts; in other words, you’re bringing together two of the best artists that the genre has to offer. When Cruz and Colón get together, the sparks usually fly—and Celia y Willie is no exception.”

CELIA Y WILLIE includes the hit “Dos Jueyes,” as well as favorites like the socially conscious “Latinos en Estados Unidos,” “Kirimbambará” and the irresistible “Come Down to Miami.”

Translating to “burst,” Héctor Lavoe’s1985 album REVENTÓ found him seeking to re-energize the declining salsa scene by bringing together the sounds and players from the genre’s heyday. He recruited Leopoldo Pineda and Lewis Khan to recreate Willie Colón’s signature trombone stylings and reunited with percussionist/vocalists Milton Cardona and José Mangual—both friends from his early days at Fania. The result was one of the most exciting and rhythmically diverse albums of Lavoe’s career.

El Cantante’s versatility is showcased through a wide range of styles, including the romantic opener, “De qué tamaño es tu amor,” which combines son and Puerto Rican bomba. Fan favorite “Déjala que siga,” meanwhile, is a pachanga number, featuring a flute solo by the great Johnny Pacheco. Lavoe’s humorous side is also on display through a Spanish-language cover of Joe Jackson’s neurotic “Cancer,” which originally appeared on the British singer-songwriter’s hit 1982 LP, Night and Day. Another pop cover is “Porqué no puedo ser felíz,” from the Argentine duo Pimpinela. With the help of celebrated percussionist, musical director and arranger José Madera, Lavoe and his band transform the song into a merengue. There is so much to enjoy on REVENTÓ! It was such a success when it released, that it remained at No. 12 of the Billboard Top Latin Albums chart for five months!
