On Friday, we were delighted to have 6th grade students from IS27 in the studio. They were super enthusiastic about media production and it showed. The students weren't apprehensive in front of the camera; they jumped right in and were ready to learn and have fun! Their visit was a great way to end the week at CMSI.

Our Technical Director, David Gonzalez, and Videographer, Joe Pozzolano, visited Anning S. Prall, I.S.27, yesterday to discuss media production and to teach students. Typically, classes come to the studio, but this was the first time we went on-site. Our hope is that the students enjoyed their visit and gained some insight into the world of media as a result!

Since September, Community Media has been the hub for New Venture Charter School students for their field work class, which runs Monday through Thursday. The students were in studio A yesterday honing their media production skills. It was great to watch them in action yesterday and we are looking forward to watching them succeed in the future. 🤩

Yesterday, we welcomed senior citizens from the JCC back to the studio for the first time since last spring! This group has come a long way and has begun to develop a new show. It was a team effort, with some of the group on camera, some on set, and others directing. It was a wonderful opportunity for them to re-touch the basics and develop a new show that they are very proud of. Looking forward to seeing what this group produces in the months to come!

Having I.S. 201 in the studio for a class trip was such a joy yesterday, and it was great to see them in action! During the trip, students had the opportunity to operate the control room and develop an on-screen presence. They also learned basic camera skills, such as framing and focus, and even got to practice interview techniques. The trip was a great success, and the students left with a better understanding of media production.

October 19th, at the Non Profit Staten Island Annual Conference, “Thriving Together: Advancing Wellbeing and Elevating the Nonprofit Sector on Staten Island,” our Executive Director, Jennifer Sammartino, received the Community Voice Award for the work Community Media of Staten Island does to elevate the voices of all Staten Islanders. “It’s incredibly validating to receive this award from the sector on Staten Island that we serve most closely,” said Jennifer. She thanked all in attendance for their warm reception since she took on the role of ED almost two years ago.

Andy Levison, our Cablecast Manager, is attending NAB this week at the Jacob K. Javits Center in New York City. Taking part in NAB is a great way to learn more about industry trends and technology, network with other industry professionals, explore hands-on exhibits, and see the newest technological advances. Andy is looking forward to making the most of NAB and coming back with valuable insights to share with our team!
