~ the latest single from Brian Ellis () is out today ~

‘mountains smaller than a stone’ is the next single available now from the upcoming full release by creative coder, composer, and multi-instrumentalist Brian Ellis // ‘of Rest and Community’ is out everywhere Aug. 30

available alongside this release is a limited special edition run of chopsticks – great for xi fans, and for turning mountain dulcimer into a hammered dulcimer, prepared mountain dulcimer, etc. A technique featured on the track “mountains smaller than a stone”, and endemic to the spirit of the albums title, stemming from the quote “food is a consistent source of Rest and Community”, of which the album pulls its name.

Internationally recognized guitarist and composer .duun releases his radiant debut album ‘Code Breaker’ today!

The album harnesses a sense of curiosity that flows through all of Duun’s work. Code Breaker finds the composer pondering the complexity behind our ability as humans to communicate thoughts, ideas, and feelings between consciousnesses with any degree of accuracy. Duun’s curiosity is felt in the compositions which push the band into intricate sonic territories.

Much of the music is written using extra musical tools and/or methods that limit the importance of more traditional musical training. As an example, some pieces are written on banjo – an instrument Duun only just picked up, midi keyboards, odd guitar tunings, written without an instrument, and so on. Listen for Duun’s musical metaphors, such as the three-way argument (the three combative melodies) playing out in ‘Actual Malice’, the imagery of flowing water in ‘They Build Dams to Stem the Flow of Tears’, and the three short movements in ‘Ever’ which represent the feeling (and reality) of being split between three continents.

‘I have always been blown away by the fact that humans—meat sacks puppeteered by strings of neurons—possess the ability to communicate thoughts, ideas, and feelings between consciousnesses with any degree of accuracy. We have to navigate vast maps of phonetic variety and struggle through overgrown thickets of expectation and convention. My puzzlement is universal, whether through written or spoken language, gesture, visual art, or music.

The pieces on Code Breaker are my musings on an array of subjects with an overarching theme of communication—understanding and misunderstanding—between individuals, groups, and on a societal level. The album illustrates the subtext found in situations political, interpersonal, medical, and discursive, via my chosen medium of music.‘

‘Ever’ by Morten Duun (.duun) is out today // the second single from ‘Code Breaker’

On ‘Ever,’ Duun is joined by vocalists Theo Bleckmann () and Mim Crellin (), who form a hauntingly beautiful trio. Vocal melodies weave their way around Duun’s blooming guitar voicings.

Duun has spent a decade performing, working, and living between Denmark, Sweden, Germany, France, Australia, and the US. In his debut album, Code Breaker, Duun melds these musical and extra-musical experiences together, exploring the theme of communication between individuals, groups, and societies.

releases her second single today – ‘Llorando.’ She offers a captivating and unique perspective on music originally written by Roy Orbison and Joe Melson, which was then translated by Rebekah Del Rio.

As we experienced with Harla’s first single, ‘Chanson Fatale,’ her ability to draw the listener close in a near hypnotic state allows the subtle intricacies of her vocal performance to command the song. Harla’s emotional range is displayed prominently on ‘Llorando.’ Starting from an intimate and fragile state, her voice gradually lifts the song to euphoric heights with soaring harmonies and guitar lines.

Announcing ‘Oxalis Triangularis’ - a triple album of thirty-three new works from thirty-three composers recorded in a fully remote setting by Apply Triangle. The project was developed through a call for scores in the summer of 2020 and stems from the resilience of artists to continue to create through a global pandemic. It is a testament to the flexibility and creativity possible through electroacoustic composition.

Oxalis Triangularis refers to the scientific name for a purple “false shamrock” due to its triangle-like leaves. Throughout three albums Apply Triangle not only showcases the innovative techniques of 33 living composers but also highlights the embodied cultural nuances inherent in each composer’s style.

Apply Triangle is a NYC-based electroacoustic trio comprising Yoshi Weinberg (flutes), Tyler Neidermayer (clarinets), and Jixue Yang (piano/keyboards). Their music utilizes live electronics like video projection, lighting elements, and audio playback, as well as amplification and processing of each acoustic instrument in real-time, to bring a multimedia experience to audiences and push the boundaries of live chamber music.

All three albums arrive on April 12. You can preorder all three in digital or CD format today!

OUT TODAY // Falling by Brooklyn-based composer and visual artist, Jesse Gelaznik ()

A stunning collection of ethereal collages built on the foundations of close collaboration ~ ‘Falling’ achieves a sound that is both relatable and new. Working with vocalist, Heather Green () and violist, Brianne Lugo (), Gelaznik builds atmospheres that emanate from ‘dust in the air’ emotions and swooshing undercurrents.

‘Sonatrinas’ from arrives this Friday, January 26.

Originally performed in a devised tuning system, the piece pays special attention to F #, critically tying sections together. The version on this recording is performed in equal temperament, mildly diminishing this effect, but you will still hear four different F #’s.

12/07/2023

Grown from explorations within alternative tuning systems, Los Angeles-based composer and performer Richard An releases a recording of his 2019 composition ‘Sonatrinas’ on January 26

The piece was one born from necessity – when building his recital program at CalArts, An originally planned to included Michael Gordon’s ‘Sonatra.’ The piece, which is described in the New Yorker by pianist Vicki Chow as a “traumatic physical experience,” proved too difficult for An to tackle at that time. A roughly 16-minute and thematically critical hole was left at the center of the program.

The solution was ‘Sonatrinas’ an original composition by An for two percussionists, a pianist and a cellist, and an obvious nod to its originator who was, at this point, a distantly musically related second cousin.

Theo Haber’s () latest record ~ The Man From There ~ has arrived. Listen everywhere you stream music or pick it up on Bandcamp today on this Bandcamp Friday!

Set in an unassuming restaurant, Theo Haber’s “The Man From There” expertly explores mundane situations from varying perspectives. Meticulously woven melodies and sound beds built like fluid dreamscapes guide us through a blind date, a proposal-gone-wrong, and a kind exchange between a server and a man outside.

“This isn’t a goal or even a truth of mine, but it was an exercise in character study that helped me to reflect on my own aspirations and routines. The couple and the server interact briefly with this character. His song has no material from the other three, to reflect his different perception of the world around him.”

Written, performed, and produced by Theo Haber

Violin 1: Lucia Warren
Violin 2: Theo Haber
Viola: Nelleke Dagher
Cello: Clara Griffin

Engineer and co-producer: Ethan Moffitt
Engineer, string quartet: Nick Bendzsa
Mixing: Theo Haber
Mastering: Dan Langa
Songwriting Advisor: David Poe
Album art: Jacqueline Andrews
