OUT TODAY: 100 untitled works in resonant aluminum by D. Edward Davis & Abby Fisher ()

a 54-minute composition for 4 vibraphones and electronics inspired by Donald Judd’s ‘100 untitled works in mill aluminum’ ~ out everywhere today in digital and CD formats ~

Composed by D. Edward Davis and performed by Abby Fisher, the piece is made up of 100 miniatures, which were carefully edited, layered, and combined with a diaphanous electronic background built from vibraphone samples.

The constant play of West Texas sunlight against the sides of Judd’s ‘100 untitled works’ — which can make the artwork glow or vanish — inspired the shimmering interplay between the electronic drones and the vibraphone. The work follows the same presentation as Judd’s work, which is divided into two buildings: the first containing 48 boxes and the second containing 52.

Only a few tickets remain for Abby Fisher’s house concert release show on February 8 in Flagstaff, AZ ~ RSVP link in bio

Limited edition CDs with a 6-panel wallet containing artwork by Lisa McCarty and liner notes from D. Edward Davis are available on Bandcamp

In her first single from an upcoming full-length release (due out in 2025), composer, percussionist, and educator Alexis C. Lamb () puts her writing for the “percussion plus” genre on full display.

‘Trigon’ stems from Lamb’s fascination with the Greek philosopher Pythagoras. The piece incorporates the resultant whole-number combinations of a “Pythagorean triangle” from the Theorem (such as the “3/4/5” triangle) along with plucked string sounds reminiscent of the ancient, triangle-shaped harp by the same name and improvised material from the performer to create a collage of number mappings between the drumset and electronics.

The single release is on the heels of a performance of ‘Trigon’ at this week’s annual Percussive Arts Society International Conference (PASIC) by Andy P. Smith () who is the featured performer on the single and one of ten total featured performers on Lamb’s to-be-announced solo record.

OUT TODAY: composer and visual artist Phong Tran’s latest release ‘The World We Left Behind’ ~ out via cmntx records

Born from a collaboration across artistic mediums with choreographer Troy Schumacher and game designer Samantha Leigh through NYC-based BalletCollective, TWWLB is a project inspired by chance and randomness.

Premiered in 2023, TWWLB began with BalletCollective commissioning a new tabletop role-playing game from Leigh. In the game, two players collaboratively explore an abandoned world and uncover shared mysteries and secrets. The game was a creative foundation for Schumacher and Tran to develop the ballet and inspired a piece rooted in chance and randomness. Schumacher and Tran used prompts from the game to build a world to explore.

Collaborating with game designer Samantha Leigh, cmntx records is offering limited edition bundles of Phong Tran’s latest release and physical copies of the game that inspired the music ~ limited numbers of bundles are being made so grab one on Bandcamp before they are gone

~ it’s release week ~

‘The World We Left Behind’ from Brooklyn based composer and visual artist arrives this Friday 11/1.

In collaboration with game designer Samantha Leigh, cmntx records will be offering limited edition bundles of Phong Tran’s latest release and physical copies of the game that inspired the music.

In The World We Left Behind, play as astronauts trekking across an alien planet. Learn about the planet’s flora and fauna while uncovering vestiges of the past. What happened to the sapient species that called this planet home? Why do only remnants of their lives remain?

During this casual worldbuilding game, players draw symbols on playing cards to create a planet, populate it with traits, and uncover the mystery of the species that left this world behind. Tell a story of wonder, companionship, and legacy in the midst of a lonely planet.

~ game bundles will go on sale via Bandcamp this week for the release

The BalletCollective will be performing ‘The World We Left Behind’ October 30-November 1 at Trinity Commons in NYC.

Tickets are still available for the 10/31 performance, and you can join the waitlist for the sold out 10/30 and 11/1 performances on the BalletCollective website.

releases ‘AMMA: Live at Holy Trinity’, a video and audio recording of the release show on December 1, 2023, in New York City, celebrating his full-length album, ‘AMMA’.

For the release show, Emanuel crafted a narrative that stitched together the poems from the album booklet into a dreamlike story. This story flowed between both new songs from ‘AMMA’ and older material, as well as free improvisations. Works such as “Trembling” are new arrangements for strings, based on the original piano improvisations featured on ‘AMMA’.

Filmmaker Matt Farrell brought extra dimension to the documentation, blending footage from the show, imagery from the album’s book of poems, and the cover artwork by legendary New Jersey painter Victor Victori, creating a psychedelic collage of words and imagery.

ANNOUNCING Emanuel Ayvas’ new album, ‘AMMA: Live at Holy Trinity’, a video and audio recording of the release show celebrating his full-length album, ‘AMMA’, on December 1, 2023, in New York City,

The original album is the result of a solo improvisation session, recorded one evening by Emanuel on digital piano and analog synthesizer in his Brooklyn home studio. In keeping with the spirit of spontaneous creation, ‘AMMA’ was released alongside a book of Emanuel’s improvisational poems and drawings.

OUT TODAY: composer and orchestrator Andrew Rowan’s () latest EP ~ Natural History Study ~ out everywhere via cmntx records

Rowan flips through the channels of his musical memory in this release. As the tape-soaked harmonies pass by, the listener is left trying to make sense of the warped images, rhythms, and textures. The EP feels familiar, but whether that is from reality or a dream is yet to be determined.

Natural History Study is a collection of compositions written for and recorded by a chamber octet – subsequently chopped, resampled, and processed through new, used, and occasionally completely mangled cassette tapes. It is music that might sound like it is performed in a fish tank in a video game or like listening to a soggy record in a fever dream.

The chamber octet is a “murderer’s row” of LA-based instrumentalists, including Mona Tian (violin), Benjamin Bartelt (viola), April Guthrie (cello), Ted Taforo (saxophones), Brian Walsh (bass clarinet), Bob Lawrence (trombone), Gregory Uhlmann (guitar), and Karl McComas-Reichl (bass).

“‘What the f**k even is this’ you might be saying to yourself, squinting toward the animations, craning your perplexed ears closer to the wooly, warping sounds. An obscure, forgotten video game left whirring overnight in a Playstation, a 200-polygon avatar discovers consciousness and wanders off screen. Yourself in a mirror, but not quite right. An inscrutable and inappropriately violent New Yorker cartoon whose punchline fascinates you but you couldn’t explain to someone else. The incessant repetitive yearn of birdsong. In the absence of intervention, how do the ghosts in all the machines live out their sunset years? This is a STUDY.”

~ the latest single from Brian Ellis () is out today ~

‘mountains smaller than a stone’ is the next single available now from the upcoming full release by creative coder, composer, and multi-instrumentalist Brian Ellis // ‘of Rest and Community’ is out everywhere Aug. 30

available alongside this release is a limited special edition run of chopsticks – great for xi fans, and for turning mountain dulcimer into a hammered dulcimer, prepared mountain dulcimer, etc. A technique featured on the track “mountains smaller than a stone”, and endemic to the spirit of the albums title, stemming from the quote “food is a consistent source of Rest and Community”, of which the album pulls its name.
