Karl Barth, Homiletics

Summary of Barth's theology of preaching (in his own words).

1. Revelation - Preaching has the task of proclaiming the past and future revelation of God, the ephiphany and parousia of Jesus Christ.

2. Church - Materially, preaching must orient itself solely to baptism as the sign of grace, to the Lord's Supper as the sign of hope, and to scripture as the record of the truth that is the basis of the church.

3. Confession - Preaching must edify the church by ongoing discharge of the commission that the Lord has given it.

4. Ministry - Preaching takes place on the special authority and responsibility of divine calling to ministry in the church.

5. Holiness - Preaching is to be understood as the action of sinners which has its law and promise in the command and the blessing of God.

6. Scripture - Preaching as exposition of scripture is in all circumstances under a constraint as regards both form and content. Preaching must not be a welling up out of our own speech. In both form and content it must be exposition of scripture.

7. Originality - Preaching can take place only in personal repentance and thankfulness, and it is thus a free word of the preacher.

8. Congregation - Preaching aims at the people of specific time to tell them that their lives have their basis and hope in Jesus Christ.

9. Spirituality - Preaching has to take place in humility and soberness and as the prayer of those that realize that God himself must confess their human word if it is to be God's Word.

Reflections from reading
1. Our doctrine of Scripture has major implications on our understanding of preaching.

2. Our message is of utmost importance and be communicated as the eternal truth that it is.

3. The preacher must relate intimately to the congregation. This enhances preaching. Spending time with your congregation does not hinder but enhances your preaching.

4. God works his sovereign plan through the preaching of His Word.
