In the new Bowery Boys podcast, we present the early history of Times Square, before the tourists and the pedicabs. It was known in the late 19th century as Longacre Square, a time when there were no Elmos or Naked Cowboys, but plenty of horses! Listen today on your favorite podcast player:

What was Times Square before the electric billboards, before the Broadway theaters and theme restaurants, before the thousands and thousands of tourists? What was Times Square before it was Times Square? Today it’s virtually impossible to find traces of the area’s 18th and 19th century past. Bu...

One hundred years ago this month, athletes from the 1924 Paris Olympics were given a ticker-tape parade up Broadway. So in the newest Bowery Boys podcast, Greg and Tom look at the history of this festive tradition rooted in lower Manhattan. Believe it or not, we have the Statue of Liberty to thank for this very unusual, very New York tradition. Listen to the whole story on your favorite podcast player:

In 1886, during a miles-long parade celebrating the dedication of the Statue of Liberty, office workers in lower Manhattan began heaving ticker tape out the windows, creating a magical, blizzard-like landscape. That tradition stuck. Today that particular corridor of Broadway — connecting Battery P...

Two hundred and twenty years ago today, one of the most important moments in American politcal history occurred on a bluff in Weehawken, NJ, overlooking the Hudson River: the fateful duel between two Founding Fathers -- Alexander Hamilton and vice president Aaron Burr. In Weehawken, you can find a monument at the spot of the former dueling grounds. In Manhattan's Meatpacking District, near the start of the High Line, is a home at 82 Jane Street that claims to be the spot where Hamilton was taken after the duel and later died. (Most historians believe that house was located a short distance north of that spot.)

The town of Breukelen, just a 11 minute train ride from Utrecht, is the namesake of the borough of Brooklyn. In 1646 the village of Breuckelen was authorized but the Dutch West India Company as a settlement associated with New Amsterdam.

This connection has been long celebrated. In 1929 the Municipal Club of Brooklyn sent a celebratory delegation to Breukelen, presenting the Dutch town with an American flag and the official Brooklyn flag.

95 years later, I decided to head into town and marvel at the town’s historic and cozy architecture, and take a deep breath after spending several days in urban areas. Among the sites are the gorgeous 17th century mansions and castles along the Vecht River, the Pieterskirk with truly ancient connections and of course the magical Nyenrode castle, home today to Nyenrode Business University.

Listen to this week’s new Bowery Boys podcast Haarlem, Breukelen, Utrecht: Exploring New York City’s Dutch Roots to follow along the end of our journey to the Netherlands.

Plus -- pickles and sinking pedal boats! Listen today and enjoy this very special adventure:

In this week's episode, Greg and Tom dispel a few myths about New Amsterdam and New York, reveal the Dutch colony's role in the slave trade and discover a different side of Peter Stuyvesant with biographer Jaap Jacobs. PLUS a stroll through the Royal Palace and a village frozen in time which resembles what New Amsterdam might have looked like.

The name Stuyvesant can be found everywhere in New York City. — in the names of neighborhoods, apartments, parks and high schools. Peter Stuyvesant, the last director-general of New Amsterdam, is a hero to some, a villain to others — and probably a caricature to all.  What do we really know abo...

This is the West-Indisch Huis — the Dutch West India House — the former headquarters (from 1623 to 1647) of the Dutch company that founded New Amsterdam. So many fateful decisions made in these rooms would alter the course of history in the future New York.

A statue of Peter Stuyvesant, the last director-general of New Amsterdam, stands in the courtyard and has become an Amsterdam tourist attraction.

The John Adams Institute makes its home in the building, an organization which brings American leaders and thinkers to the Netherlands, named for John Adams who served as a diplomat here following the Revolutionary War (before he became the first Vice President). There’s also a lovely restaurant next to Peter!

We want to thank Ian Kenny from the John Adams Institute for giving us a wonderful tour of the building.

Some images of the fascinating model of New Amsterdam sponsored by the New Holland Foundation and manufactured by Artitec, a scale model design and construction firm in Amsterdam Noord. You heard Greg and Tom visit the project during its construction in this week’s episode (episode 435).

Hopefully you’ll see the model in New York City soon! If you’re interested in helping make this happen, visit the website for the New Holland Foundation (https://www.newhollandfoundation.nl) or email Oscar Hefting directly ([email protected])

On the latest Bowery Boys podcast, Tom and Greg visit the city of Leiden to find the first European settlers of the New York region. And along they way -- they discover the Pilgrims as well! Then you'll hear about the history of Amsterdam, from the development of its canals to the Tulip Craze. And before the episode is over, they'll come face to face -- with Peter Stuyvesant.

Our adventure in the Netherlands continues with a quest to find the Walloons, the French-speaking religious refugees who became the first settlers of New Netherland in 1624. Their descendants would last well beyond the existence of New Amsterdam and were among the first people to call themselves New...
