I love Unwound. I got to see them twice (about 20 years ago now) one of the shows having been in a bus station haha. Great intro to a great band!

For the uninitiated, as well as for burgeoning fans looking for next steps after "Leaves Turn Inside You,” here’s a brisk run through the band’s discography.

Punk Island shows NYC what's at punk's core: community.

I took a break from the post Punk Island wrap up stuff to catch Pelican, Cloakroom, and Planning For Burial last night. I love continuing to try different things so I went for a darker grainy all b/w vibe which I think really suits this genre anyway. I also experimented with some fun long exposure stuff which I've been posting in my Instagram story as outtakes, this piece has all the "straight" shots.

Truth be told, I was exhausted and a touch cranky hahaha BUT it was worth it cuz this was an amazing show and I'm so glad I rallied and went. I may be a punk on the outside, and it is and will ALWAYS be my first true love, but I'm a nerd at heart and bands like this absolutely fascinate and speak to me on a very different level than punk.

Anyyyyyyway, take a look at the pics now over BrooklynVegan and stay tuned for when I eventually get my instrumental/experimental project I've been thinking about for years going.....

Pelican recently returned with their first album in six years, Nighttime Stories (out now on Southern Lord), and their tour supporting it hit NYC's Brooklyn Bazaar last night...

Punk Island comes but once a year and it is a day that means so much to me. Every ounce of physical pain, exhaustion, and exasperation leading up to the fest is so so worth it when I get to see my friends, meet new amazing people, hear bands I love, and get excited to check out new ones I never knew about but that my fellow organizers brought to the table.

Proud of the fest we had this year, our biggest EVER in terms of bands and also in terms of what else we had there for the community- in particular the skill shares and harm reduction resources. These things matter just as much as the music so thank you to every group that came out to educate folks and thank you to all the bands who played, vendors who shared their work/art, and every volunteer who sweated it out with us.

If I can rally myself a bit more, I'll write up more soon, but I have to run out to shoot yet another thing tonight hahahaha, I don't know how to stop! But once I've done that and cleared my mind a bit (and taken care of some housekeeping as well) I'll write up some more feelings and specific thanks for the LEGENDS that made my stage the success it was this year.

In the meantime, enjoy the pics in BrooklynVegan punks, if you'd like to post anything, I prefer you NOT screenshot stuff (makes it look like s**t and thusly ME look like a hack hahaha) so just reach out and I'm happy to send you a copy of the photo. Please tag/link my IG handle (can you guess what it is??? @ hoosatron hahahaha) on anything you post!

The annual free, all-ages, all-DIY punk fest brought nearly 100 bands to NYC's Randall's Island on Saturday.

I took a lil step outside my comfort zone and shot Beach House a few days ago. I say out of my comfort zone because I'm not used to shooting in those lighting conditions and up until last fall, I rarely, if ever, shot without a flash. A year ago I could never have handled this situation cuz I hadn't developed my eye yet to work with the available light and only that light with no flash or other extra lights to help me. I also got a lot more comfortable with darkness (I never ever took dark photos before either cuz I was so in love with my flash hahaha) and knowing when it's totally okay and even better to go WITHOUT flash and that shadows/patterns/darkness can make killer fu***ng pics too. Flash is a great tool and I love it, but I think even more now I really understand it in a way I couldn't before when I relied so heavily on it.

Anyway, I'm stoked with the progress I've made as a photographer and keep looking for things to push myself to be better. So I jumped at the chance to shoot this show for exactly that reason. I really enjoyed the challenge and Beach House's aesthetic, cuz coming from being a DIY punk kid for life, seeing bands put that much attention to detail and care into the total experience of seeing them live is really impressive. I don't think that I totally "nailed it!" but I feel happy for the most part with the results (but wouldn't mind shooting them again to work on things I didn't get quite right this time)

As an added bonus, I really love the opening band Ed Schrader's Music Beat so it was awesome getting to see them as a 3 piece now (last time I saw them was almost 5 years ago now at Death By Audio, RIP) and really love the shots I got of them!

Sorry for the novel haha, I am a nerd after all! Anyhooooo, click the link and take a look at the pics!!!!

Both last night and tonight's Brooklyn Steel shows featured fellow Baltimoreans Ed Schrader's Music Beat.
