01/16/2023

Today we commemorate Martin Luther King Jr and acknowledge the continuation of his commitment to building a world where difference can be celebrated rather than condemned. As we celebrate the contributions and life of Martin Luther King Jr, we ask that you all revisit his radical practice and review the revisionist upkeep of his legacy.

Our co-founder Dr. Jenn Jackson () in their article “Martin Luther King, Jr Was Radical: We Must Reclaim That Legacy”, contends that King’s “life has been filtered through a revisionist lens, but his radical legacy is a balm in today’s political climate”.

Oftentimes, King’s legacy is diluted to that of “non-violent activism”. This intentional curtailment of his practice and ideals empties the history surrounding his socialization. Dr. Jackson shares that “much like young Black people today, King’s radical ideals were born out of intense social unrest and violence”.

Dr. Jackson asserts that “King’s legacy teaches us that political protest, and his fight for economic justice for all people, is a tool to challenge the status quo rather than assimilate into it. His work shows that, as the conditions of state-sanctioned persecution and inequality change, we too must allow ourselves to be changed.”

To learn more about Martin Luther King Jr, his radical direct action, and legacy, please read Dr. Jenn Jackson’s article, linked in our bio.

We wish you a safe, reflective, and intentional MLK Day.
