I took my son to the doctor recently, and it turned into a much bigger moment than I expected.

My son is 16, and he’s been really self-conscious about his height. He’s 5'4", which isn’t unusual, but since I’m 6'5" and his mom is 5'8", we always assumed he’d be taller. He’s mentioned it to me a few times, and eventually he asked if he could see a doctor to find out if he’s still growing.

I checked in with his mom first—she brushed it off and joked that he could be a “short king.” But he was serious about it, so I decided to take him.

The doctor did an X-ray and explained that his growth plates are closed—meaning he’s done growing. 5'4" will be his final height. The doctor assured us he’s perfectly healthy, that it’s just genetics, but my son took the news pretty hard. He told me he feels like something is “wrong” with him and he’s worried about how people will see him for the rest of his life.

When I told his mom, she got upset with me for taking him, saying I just made things worse. But honestly, I don’t regret it. My son wanted answers, and I think it’s better he knows the truth than to keep wondering. Now the focus can shift to helping him feel confident in who he is.
