๐๏ธ S2 E9 ๐๏ธ According to the American Psychological Association, smiling (even if forced) can help boost oneโs mood. But what if you cannot seem to smile in public? @CDCgov states that one-quarter of adults over 65 have severe tooth loss. We see the publicโs endeavor to combat these through the rise of utilizing the dental technologies of teeth whitening, porcelain veneers, braces, implants, and Invisalignยฎ. But many myths online surround the world of dental health and oral hygiene. Are yellow teeth normal? Do whitening strips work? Is there irreversible teeth misalignment? ๐๏ธ S2 E8 ๐๏ธ According to American Library Association, around 22,000 children's books were published in 2009 alone. A myriad of papers and storylines arrive in people's homes every day, ranging from magical worlds to scientific pamphlets. However, only a small fraction of these books are targeted at kids who have developed an interest in the sciences of the human body. Due to an extensive list of medical terms, organ systems, and anatomical parts, the pool of children's books that satiates the interest in learning about the inner workings of people's bodies is very poor and sometimes inaccessible. The newest Amazon book series, โMedical School for Kids,โ seeks to change all of this.Todayโs episode features the authors of Medical School for Kids, physician couple @betty.nguyen and @brandonphammd. ๐๏ธ S2 E7 ๐๏ธ According to @mayoclinic, about 50% of women suffer from urinary incontinence, the inability to control urination voluntarily. However, only 25-61% of affected women discuss this problem with their healthcare providers. The resistance to sharing these urologic issues, both men and women, stem from shame and fear of judgment. This also stands true for other medical issues confined within the intimate parts of our bodies, including sexual dysfunction (whether it be low libido and premature ejaculation) and anatomical conditions (like uterine prolapse). Today, with empathy and compassion, we bring to light the pertinent issues "down there" that one may usually hide and fear. S1 E26: Emotional Dentistry with Dr. Tate Masunaga and Dr. Kevin Thanh Nguyen: https://spoti.fi/3RTpe0Z
When I think of the dentist, all I can remember is my countless visits to the office as a child for my endless cavities and root canals. I feel like I can still feel every needle-pinch of anesthesia, the pressure of the drill, and the tantalizing ache of piercing my pulp. That said, I developed a fear of dentists growing up. It was only recently that I realized the beauty behind dental care and the art behind individual practitioners' practice. Though this fear of dentists is a common sentiment amongst the general population, the field also brings another overpowering feeling: hope. Missing teeth, crooked alignment, discolorations...these are some presentations that can undoubtedly cloud someone's self-confidence. Thankfully, we have superheroes of the teeth who give others the reason to smile again.
In this episode, we have two of these tooth fairies to speak to us about their wonder-working powers: Dr. Tate Masunaga and Dr. Kevin Thanh Nguyen. Receiving his Doctor of Dental Medicine degree from Oregon & Health Sciences University in 2017, Dr. Masunaga now practices as a general dentist in Seattle, Washington. Dr. Nguyen, on the other hand, also received his Doctor of Dental Medicine degree from the Western University of Health Sciences in 2020 and is now practicing in Huntington Beach, California.
What are the risks of an unfilled cavity? Does charcoal toothpaste actually work? Are yellow and stained teeth normal? How necessary is flossing? Are bleeding gums of concern? Do at-home teeth whitening strips actually work? And a controversial question that took over TikTok...can dentists really tell if someone has done..."the deed"? ๐ So much misinformation and myths also envelop the field of teeth of oral hygiene, and we have not just one, but two, experts to tackle each one. The molar, the merrier. ๐ฆท๐

S1 E25: The World of Nursing with Katie Duke: https://spoti.fi/3T9tTNl
Ranked as The Most Trusted Profession for the past 20 years according to the Gallup Poll, one can't really say that the Nursing field is one that is most appreciated. As a nurse myself who has gone through schooling and working within different aspects of the field (inpatient hospital, outpatient, skilled nursing facility, concierge), I can personally say that the profession is one filled with so many bittersweet sentiments (and definitely has changed even more with the commencement of the pandemic). I remember reciting my nursing oath during graduation and how my eyes were almost welling up with tears with the hopeful excitement of finally being able to take care of real patients. Little did I know that I was entering a field where, sadly, it's not always about the patients. Politics, administration, shame, violence. These were just a few truths of the job that nursing school does not prepare you for...or even warn you about. We have one special person to talk to us about all things about the world of nursing...the ins and outs, the good and the bad. No other than Katie Duke herself.
If you're within the nursing field and have been on social media, you most probably know Katie. Labeling herself as "audacious," her story is perfectly in tune with this title. Receiving her Associate's degree in Nursing in 2004 from Goldfarb School of Nursing at Barnes Jewish College and then her Bachelor's degree in Nursing in 2011 from Hunter College (alumni twins!), and furthering her education with her Master's of Science degree as a Nurse Practitioner in 2015 from Columbia University, Katie Duke has harnessed almost two decades of nursing experience with clinical backgrounds in emergency medicine, transplant and heart failure cardiology and electrophysiology, and travel nursing and now stands as an acute care nurse practitioner by trade. However, Katie has ventured waves beyond the world of nursing as one of
