WR: Authenticity and vulnerability are ethos often felt and heard in your music. Along your musical journey thus far, have there been times that it has been easier or difficult to remain authentically you? How have you gone about that process?

SM: “I guess it’s sort of hard to tell what is actually “authentic” when it comes to music/ art these days, but I’m glad the vulnerability part of the music is legible. I think it’s difficult and/or impossible to not be unconsciously (or consciously) influenced by music that’s happening around you, especially now that we are inundated with constant stimulus at our fingertips. I don’t necessarily think that’s a bad thing but does lead to these pockets of homogeny within certain musical circles. I definitely have caught myself working on records of my own, and had to question the intention or the direction - sometimes if you hear a record that’s popular and “working” it could be hard not to think “let me just try to make something like that!”. I’m eclectic in my nature and also like being able to create stuff that’s across genres. In terms of remaining “authentically me” - I think it’s difficult sometimes to know what means, but the north star for me is always - If I’m energized and excited by it, then let’s pursue it to the end.”
