Pete Rock & CL Smooth, an American Hip-Hop duo hailing from Mount Vernon, New York, made their mark in the early '90s. DJ Pete Rock, known for his masterful use of soul and jazz samples, teamed up with the conscious lyricism of CL Smooth. Their debut EP, "All Souled Out", dropped in 1991, and their LP "Mecca and the Soul Brother" followed in 1992, showcasing their hit track "They Reminisce Over You (T.R.O.Y.)", a tribute to their fallen friend Trouble T-Roy. This song became their signature piece, a poignant ode in the rap world at the time.
Initially signed to Elektra Records and managed by Eddie F of Heavy D & The Boyz, the duo found success through their collaborative efforts with other artists like Public Enemy, EPMD, Heavy D, Johnny Gill, and their work on Run–D.M.C.'s "Down with the King". Their musical journey continued with "The Main Ingredient" in 1994, yet creative differences led to their breakup in 1995, though they intermittently collaborated on some of Pete Rock's solo projects.
Despite occasional reunions and talk of a third album, ongoing disputes kept them from fully reuniting. Both artists pursued individual paths, CL Smooth released solo albums like "American Me" and "The Outsider", while Pete Rock worked on production for various artists. Efforts toward a third album between the duo persisted but ultimately stalled due to resurfacing tensions.
A brief reunion in 2010 was sparked by the passing of Hip-Hop pioneer Guru, prompting Pete Rock and CL Smooth to reconcile their differences. While a new album was promised, complications and conflicts arose, leading to the dissolution of plans for the third album by 2018, as the ongoing disagreements between the two artists persisted.
Either way, Pete Rock & CL Smooth will be remembered for the success of their impactful collaborations and the imprint they left on the genre.
This isn't their whole story but we always suggest anyone who's a fan of the culture go read more for themselves. Much respect to the legends, we appreciate your contributions to Hip-Hop.
