Anne Morrison on Norman Morrison's self-immolation | Clip from FAR FROM VIETNAM
In 1965, Norman Morrison, a Quaker and anti-war pacifist, set himself ablaze in front of the Pentagon to protest the U.S. war in Vietnam.
In this clip from FAR FROM VIETNAM, Anne Morrison recounts the story of her husband's sacrifice. Director William Klein intercuts her interview with Ann Uyen, a Vietnamese woman living in Paris, who talks about the importance of the act to Vietnam.
Initiated and edited by Chris Marker, FAR FROM VIETNAM is a collaboration between cinema greats Jean-Luc Godard, Joris Ivens, William Klein, Claude Lelouch and Alain Resnais in protest of American military involvement in Vietnam.
Per Marker's narration, "to affirm, by the exercise of their craft, their solidarity with the Vietnamese people in struggle against aggression."

THE FIRST YEAR
Never seen on American screens before, THE FIRST YEAR (El primer año), is the 1972 debut feature by master documentarian Patricio Guzmán, all set for a weeklong engagement at Anthology Film Archives in New York City, playing September 8—15, followed by other North American cities.
This long overdue theatrical run is presented in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the 1973 U.S.-backed coup in Chile, which saw the democratically elected socialist government of President Salvador Allende violently toppled by military forces led by General Augusto Pinochet, a cataclysmic event that marked a turning point not only in the history of Chile but in the history of Latin America as a whole.
THE FIRST YEAR is a prequel of sorts to Guzmán’s THE BATTLE OF CHILE, by many accounts one of the greatest documentary films ever made, which will be screened simultaneously at BAM Film in Brooklyn from September 8th.
Tickets are now on sale at Anthology Film Archives: https://bit.ly/45ygl40

Opening on Friday, September 8, three days before the 50th anniversary of the coup in Chile on September 11, 1973, THE BATTLE OF CHILE will have a weeklong run BAM Film Rose Cinemas in New York City, followed by other cities.
