Happy Black History Month & Long Live El Sonero Mayor!!!
・・・

・・・

・・・
Gov. Kathy Hochul has decided against removing embattled New York City Mayor Eric Adams from office, Gothamist has learned.

Hochul, a Democrat, is set to announce Thursday that she will not invoke her authority under state and city law to force Adams out at this time, according to a source familiar with the governor’s decision who was not authorized to speak publicly.

Instead, the governor will unveil new state and city bills that would increase oversight of the mayor’s office. That includes creation of a new state deputy inspector general with broad authority to watch over the city’s dealings, the source told Gothamist.

Hochul will ask lawmakers to approve the legislation when they return to the Capitol in Albany next week.

February is Black History Month, which is a time to recognize and celebrate the contributions and achievements of African Americans. We at the Dyckman Farmhouse seek to engage with an inclusive history that brings to the front the stories of the enslaved people who lived and worked in the Farmhouse. Many of the recent art exhibitions at DFM have interacted with this history of enslavement, and it is something which we are constantly seeking to learn more about.

Exhibitions like “No Records” by Reggie Black, which projected the unseen, or willfully ignored, history of enslavement onto the side of the Farmhouse was meant to bring visual form to the history of enslavement that is often ignored in New York City. When describing the projection, Black said “Everyday we walk past buildings and streets named after slave owners. For us, Black people, to tell our own stories is a powerful confrontation of that history. Let’s put that on display, too.”

Other exhibitions like Peter Hoffmeister’s “Ground Revision” also brought increased attention to the history of enslavement present both in the Farmhouse and New York City, including the African Burial Ground in Lower Manhattan. Hoffmeister’s fourth installation in “Ground Revision” is called “Francis Cudjoe” which is the only enslaved African in the Dyckman household who is identified by first and last name in surviving historical records. Hoffmeister says, “In remembering Francis Cudjoe we not only memorialize an individual, we come to understand that our American present is inextricably linked to an oppressive American past.”
