I FOUND MY GOLDEN NECKLACE UNDER MY FOSTER DAUGHTER'S MATTRESS BUT THE NEXT DAY, I BEGGED HER TO FORGIVE ME FOR ACCUSING HER
My husband and I have been married for twelve years, and we have a beautiful daughter. We've always dreamed of a big, loving family, so after a lot of discussion, we decided to foster a child. Our eight-year-old daughter, Lacey, was over the moon. "I can't wait to have a sister!" she said, twirling around the living room.
Then came Sophie. She was a quiet nine-year-old with big brown eyes that seemed to take in everything.
One day, Lacey asked if she could try on my favorite gold necklace. I said, "Sure," and went to get it. But when I opened my jewelry box, it was empty. My stomach sank.
I tore the place apart—drawers, counters, the bathroom—nothing. Then, as I was changing the girls' sheets, there it was—under Sophie's mattress.
I called her over, trying to stay calm. "Sophie, how did this get here?"
Her eyes went wide, and she started shaking her head. "I didn't put it there! I swear!"
Then Lacey chimed in, "Yes, you did!"
And that's when my girls started screaming at each other at the top of their lungs.
When we decided to foster, I thought I was ready for the challenges. But I wasn't prepared for it to get THIS messy. And I never realized the real problem wasn't the foster child—it was ME.
