There are an estimated 3,361 fraternal organizations in the state of alone. Freemasonry is among the oldest of them, and certainly the most influential. But that influence goes both ways.

Just as many fraternal organizations have borrowed from blue lodge Masonry, so too has the craft borrowed elements from other and quasi-Masonic rites—from groups as varied and mystical as the Swedenborgian Rite, the Zuzimites, and countless others.

Those connections are at the heart of the 2024 California Masonic Symposium on Wednesday, August 28. At this FREE, online event, join Masonic scholars for a range of presentations on some of the most mysterious and esoteric Masonic rites—what is often referred to as "fringe Masonry."

Since 2015, the Grand Lodge of California has made a priority of developing new lodges throughout the state. The idea is to both establish a greater presence in communities without an existing lodge, as well as to offer a greater range of choices to members.

It wasn't always like this: Only five lodges that launched from 1970 to 2000 are still in existence. However, in the time since then, a whopping 36 new lodges have opened up (including two research lodges), along with four more under dispensation. Of those, 25 were established since 2017.

What has this lodge-building boom meant for the fraternity? Ethnically diverse, culturally attuned, sometimes proudly eccentric, these groups show that while building a lodge is no easy feat, it’s also worth the reward.

This , we revisit our exploration into Filipino history and Freemasonry and look back on this day from 1898 when the nation declared its independence from Spanish rule.⁠

Many of the leading figures of the fight for independence were in fact Freemasons and Masonic lodges provided much of the infrastructure that helped power the anti-colonial movement. As a result, has been strongly identified with Filipino nationalism.⁠
⁠
Chief among them is Dr. José Rizal, the martyred national hero who advocated for the expanded rights of Filipinos under Spanish colonial rule and Andrés Bonifacio, founder of the Katipunan, the famous secret organization that in 1896 become part of the Philippine Revolutionary Army.⁠
