Soul Summit, July 24, 2011, Fort Greene Park, Brooklyn. Oh what a time! So many memories. All the positive vibes. On this day, for the first time, I witnessed the amazing Miranda Nicole perform her hit song “Kissing You.” I thought to myself, who is this woman? She is amazing, her voice is on point, she has all this style and good energy. I have been a fan ever since. We will meet one day and perhaps even create some portraits of her once again. Blessings Miranda!

I had the pleasure of connecting with Coach Rito after many conversations surrounding mental health as our healing journeys took us down intertwining paths. We share experiences filled with pain and suffering and celebrate the wins and continued growth as we march on together one day at a time. While we get to engage in conversations about life it is an honor to be able to create with Rito and share in this photographic experience. I remember asking Rito if he would allow me to capture him and create portraits and he answered immediately, “Yes.” This yes turned into a trip to Washington State and opened the door to further healing, support, and friendship. Thank you Rito, may you continue to be blessed in the work you do and lives you help change along the way. Take note his tattoos which are a way he shares in his own healing journey and provides an opportunity to connect with many people all over the world.

Photographer James Ray Francis is a patron angel of the Kamoinge Workshop — and also a pioneer who helped society accept what we do as art. His efforts helped pave the way for every single photographer that came after him. Kamoinge spotlighted the portfolios of black photographers in a time when photography was seen as a lesser artform. Process that carefully — and remember that there was a time where POCs were looked upon with far less reverence than they are today. Then couple that with how society doesn’t show photography the adoration it deserves yet relies so heavily on. In many ways, photography still is seen that way — but through the work of people like Francis, it’s become far more respected.

Photographer James Ray Francis is being honored by Bruce Silverstein gallery during the month of February for Black History Month.
