Cambodia Condemns Destruction of Sacred Statue Amid Escalating Border Conflict

Phnom Penh, Dec 24, 2025 — Cambodia’s Ministry of Cult and Religion has condemned the destruction of a Preah Vishnu statue by Thai military forces inside Cambodian territory in Preah Vihear Province, calling it a grave violation of religious freedom, cultural heritage, and international law.

The Ministry said the incident occurred amid ongoing indiscriminate military attacks involving heavy weapons, fighter jets, drones, toxic agents, and cluster munitions, which have caused civilian casualties and widespread damage to homes, schools, hospitals, monasteries, and ancient temples, forcing mass displacement.

Cambodia urged Thailand to immediately cease hostilities, respect the ceasefire and the Kuala Lumpur Peace Agreement, and resolve disputes peacefully in accordance with international law, while calling on the international community to condemn the attacks.

Please be informed about the situation along the Cambodia-Thailand border regarding the Thai military forces continuing their violation of Cambodian sovereign territory in the innocent civilian residential area, in the 5th Military Region, Stoeung Bot village, Phsar Kandal district, Poipet municipality, Banteay Meanchey province, on December 26, 2025.

- From 9:59am to 10:53am, the Thai military continued firing 6 more shells of 155mm artillery into Stoeung Bot village, Phsar Kandal district, Poipet municipality, Banteay Meanchey province.

The brutal actions above are indiscriminate attacks by the Thai military, a serious violation of international humanitarian law.

The Cambodian forces continue to monitor the situation closely, and stand strong, brave, and remain vigilant in fulfilling their roles to protect the territorial integrity of Cambodia. We will protect our dignity with courage and unwavering resolve, at any cost, and without succumbing to coercion or intimidation in any form.
