Had in the studio tracking drums for the new single yesterday! Believe it or not, this was my first time recording drums since I re-did the live room last year, and it sounded fantastic! Also used my signature kit for the first time.
As far as mics go, my setup has remained fairly consistent. Sm57 and Unidyne III on the snare, Sennheiser MD421's on the toms, Audix D6 on the kick, a pair of 90's Røde NT-2's as overheads, and a pair of Cascade Fatheads as room mics.
I spent a ton of time getting the tuning of the kit dialed in with my Tune Bot and it's made a huge difference. Can't wait to share the completed drum tracks!

Current main studio kit! Truth custom drums Aaron Gillespie signature kit. 14x7 snare, 13x8 and 16x14 toms, and a massive 24x16 kick. Only 85 of these kits were made back in 2010, so we're very lucky to have one of these in the studio.

One of my favorite pieces of gear I've picked up recently is this Ampex 601 that I purchased off of Facebook Marketplace for $60. Probably my favorite use of it is running a clean bass DI into it to add some grit and character. I used this method all over the new album.

I know I've been teasing it for weeks, but the upgrades to the live room of the studio are complete! The first upgrade was getting rid of the old portable air conditioner (that was too loud to run while recording) and install a mini split unit that was quiet enough to leave running while tracking drums and vocals.
The next major improvement was replacing the carpet floors with a wood laminate. This seems counterintuitive, but I was constantly running into issues where the drums were too dead and, because of the relatively low ceilings, the cymbals were too loud. To fix this issue, I added a pair of clouds above the cymbals.
Of course, I can't thank my dad enough for all the help he gave me with this project. I'll be testing out some mic placements over the course of the week and then Friday it's back to work with on the new record!
