WYES mourns the loss of Andres “Andy” Calandria, the longtime "voice" of WYES as station announcer and audio engineer, who died Tuesday, November 18.
Andy began working at WYES in 1976 and even in retirement his voice continues to be heard on the station in on-air spots, station IDs and many programs he narrated, including the long-running "Great Chefs" series and the annual Rex Ball and Meeting of the Courts.
A New Orleans native, Andy began his broadcasting career in the U.S. Air Force, later going to work at WDSU AM-FM-TV under the mentorship of legendary announcer Gay Batson.
He worked as a newsman at WTIX-AM (where his on-air name was J. Andrew Michaels) before joining the staff at WYES full-time.
"Even in his retirement, Andy continued to do voiceover work for WYES and had just last week recorded a script for a spot in production," said WYES President & CEO Robin Cooper. "While he may be gone, his voice lives on in the on-air spots and programs that he narrated. Please join me in keeping his wife, Toni, in your thoughts and prayers."
