After years of writing music, I began to get frustrated with not being able to audibly articulate the orchestral production going on in my head. I hated Pro Tools (which hasn’t changed much) and anything in the digital realm. Too sibilant for taste. Not for the awful sound but for it’s absence of security and it’s awful reliability. I knew that if I were to drop a tape off of a 3 story building and then a hard drive, I knew that the tape would survive. Music is meant to survive, not disappear over the years... at least if you give a damn. Anyways, back to the story. Over the years I began to acquire recording equipment here and there, eventually having what I needed to get what I needed done. In a sense, the studio got started from me just wanting to have control over how my songs would be printed to music on my own time. I’ve been recording since I was 2 or 3 years old starting with handheld cassette recorders when I used to annoy everyone and get their reactions on tape. I learned a lot over the years through trial and error, extensive research, participating in online forums, etc. I've become accustomed to getting the very best results organically from the source and have gained a lot of skill by practicing and being exposed to less than par recording setups. Today that translates to a backwoods approach to music in general which always leads to a better recording, it’s a fact. Setting up a mic anywhere and saying if it sounds terrible we can just "fix it in the mix" is the mindset of someone who has been led to believe a lie. Plugins are creations made from people who know a lot more than just how to turn one on. It’s great to know how to turn one on but better to know how to get that sound without one. That precursor knowledge that we seem to have forgotten about is exactly what I cherish and live by when it comes to this stuff, the fundamentals are key to an organic great sound.. that and a nice tape machine.
