Festively Gay Things To Do Daily Spotlight: Mardi Gras season is almost upon us. And it begins with the 18th annual Joan of Arc Parade. The pasde will roll through the French Quarter on Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2026, marking Joan of Arc’s 614th birthday. This year’s parade will feature a new route due to construction in the French Quarter. It begins at Bienville and Front streets at 7:30 p.m. The ceremonial blessing of Joan’s sword will take place at St. Mary’s Chapel on Chartres Street instead of St. Louis Cathedral. The toast to royalty will be from the 416 Chartres balcony at the Chef Paul Prudhomme Building. The parade ends at French Market Place and Barracks Street near the New Orleans Jazz Museum.

New signature throws include handmade journals, painted soldiers, a medieval songbook and a saint medallion featuring original artwork by Jackson Square artist Tara Gass-Braden. The piece, titled ‘Courage,’ was selected from the 2024 Joan of Art juried exhibition.

Also new this year is a large puppet named ‘Blessing Joan’, modeled after the “Joanie on the Pony” statue. Operated by krewe members, the puppet’s hands will bless the crowd as it passes.

The walking parade, which began in 2008 with about 50 members, now includes roughly 850 participants.

Albert J. Carey Jr., a pioneer of the LGBT community and a true New Orleans original, passed away on January 2, 2026, at the age of 86.

A devoted and beloved member of the Krewe of Armeinius, Albert served with distinction as Captain, King, and Queen, and was a paramount force in shaping the Krewe’s survival, spirit, and direction. Le Cabaret offered a unique New Year's Eve experience, enabling patrons to celebrate the start of the new year on multiple occasions. The first toast occurred at 6 PM, aligning with London's midnight celebrations, where the owners were presently holidaying. The event featured complimentary champagne and a notable Changing of the Guard performance. This setup allowed guests to celebrate without the frenzy typically associated with midnight. Benjamin Bigelow's performance of Auld Lang Syne was a highlight. The venue demonstrated creativity, with attendees sporting party hats and noise makers. 12/31/25

The esteemed Allstate Sugar Bowl Parade kicked off New Year's Eve festivities, proceeding through the historic French Quarter. Accompanied by my friend Jeremy Smith, I thoroughly enjoyed the celebrations, fully embracing the Mardi Gras atmosphere. The Signature Destination Management team appreciates the invitation from Mardi Gras World and River City Venues to participate in this exceptional event. It was wonderful to see all the various New Orleans dance troupes and marching bands from Ole Miss and Georgia. Our jester float was particularly stunning, thanks to Kern Studios' exceptional design. It was a great way to spend the afternoon throwing beads and being with friends from the hospitality community. 11/31/25
