Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand held a brief press conference at Munson-Williams-Proctor Arts Institute today (Oct. 3) to discuss her introduction of bilateral legislationin Congress to commemmorate the 100th anniversary of women's suffrage in 2017.
Utica College's first woman president, Laura Casamento, and the chair of the history department at UC, Sherri Cash, also made brief remarks, along with Anna D'Ambrosio, curator at MWPAI.
Meanwhile, my friend Jane Spellman of Ilion, publisher of Women Belong In History Books, presented both volumes of her book as a gift to Sen. Gillibrand. Volume 2 was just released a month ago and is available for $25 from local historical societies.

Women Belong in History Books second volume released

The new book, Volume Two of “Women Belong in History Books, Herkimer and Oneida Counties, 1700-1950,” edited by Jane Spellman, is now available for purchase.
The book features the stories of 55 women from Herkimer and Oneida Counties, written by 30 authors from the area, like Mary Zoller (aka Polly Jenkins and the Plowboys), a music and movie star from Ilion, Cash Garvey, a golf pro from Utica, and Helen Roosevelt Robinson, the last resident of Gelston Castle.
The book is $25 plus tax and is available for purchase at the Rome Historical Society, Herkimer County Historical Society and other retail outlets including Ace of Diamonds Mine, Adirondack Art and Framing, Adirondack Reader, Dolgeville-Manheim Historical Society, Gansevoort House Books, Gems Along the Mohawk, Munson Williams Proctor Institute, Newport History Center, North Country Books, Old Forge Hardware, Oneida County Historical Society, Town of Paris Historical Society, Town of Webb Historical Association, and West Winfield Library.
