Prior owners painted original cabinets and put up “backsplash”. Feels like some type of cardboard!

We have a circa 1903 stained glass lamp in the dining room. The fringe will fall if touched, and many strands have. I want to remove and save the original beads for the next owner and get new beard to put up now. My husband says ask someone before you do anything. What do you think?
