This week in time, Edward Whymper and his team dared to conquer the mighty Matterhorn. They became the first to summit the treacherous peak, but their success soon turned to sorrow. As they descended, a horrifying accident unfolded, leading to several deaths.
Whymper had a heated rivalry with Italian mountaineer Jean-Antoine Carrel. When Whymper discovered Carrel's plans to ascend from Italy, he raced to the Swiss side of the mountain, determined to claim the summit. Against all odds, his team reached the top, basking in their victory.
But tragedy struck during the descent. One of the team members, Michel Croz, paused to assist another less experienced climber, Douglas Haddow. In a moment of misfortune, Hadow stumbled into Croz, sending both men and others plummeting down the rock face. Desperate efforts to stop the fall failed, and the men tragically perished.
Investigations cleared Whymper and his remaining team of any wrongdoing, revealing the use of an old and unsuitable reserve rope. Nevertheless, Whymper spent the rest of his life defending his innocence, grappling with the aftermath of the Matterhorn disaster.
This fateful event marked the end of the golden age of alpinism and garnered international attention. Check out the WeekInTime newsletter for more interesting stories like this!
