During a Public Hearing about the South-Central Connecticut Regional Water Authority’s expected bid to acquire Aquarion Water Company, which serves New Canaan, First Selectman Dionna Carlson Town of New Canaan addressed the meeting with significant concerns of possible negative effects on New Canaan.
Carlson pointed out that Regional Water Authority (RWA), a quasi-government agency created by the state legislature and which now serves the Greater New Haven Area, has imposed significantly larger rate increases on its customers over the past 10 years than Aquarion has on its customers. Aquarion is a private entity that is regulated in Connecticut by the Public Utilities Regulatory Authority. It is currently proposed to be sold by Eversource. The Public Hearing, held on Aug. 22, was conducted by RWA.
The First Selectman questioned RWA’s statement that they would not impose rate increases in the event its bid for Aquarion is successful. Also, she spoke of her concern about New Canaan probably losing revenue over the long term when comparing the property taxes now paid by Aquarion to the Payments In Lieu Of Taxes (PILOT) as proposed by RWA.

Town of New Canaan Town of New Canaan Office of Emergency Management Update:
The State of Connecticut Department of Emergency Management and Homeland Security is surveying residents and businesses to quantify the damages that occurred in the flooding this Sunday and Monday, August 18th and 19th.
New Canaan reminds residents to document any damages, take pictures, track expenses and make sure to contact their insurance company(ies) to report any loss.
The information on this survey will be used to determine if the State of CT and its residents are eligible for post-disaster programs through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and/or the Small Business Administration (SBA).
It is not a guarantee of any FEMA or SBA assistance, however, we as a State must meet certain damage thresholds in order to potentially become eligible for disaster assistance and this survey will aid in these efforts. This is not a claim or request for assistance and is a voluntary submission.
The survey for both residential as well as commercial loss is below, we strongly encourage you to participate if you had any storm-related damages:
https://crisistrack.juvare.com/public/CTDEMHS/request.html
More information will follow in the weeks and months ahead as the State pursues a Federal Disaster Declaration, and we will provide updates as we receive them.
