Town of New Canaan New Canaan Parks & Recreation
Coppo Baseball Field
Construction is underway at the north end of Waveny Park, next to Lapham Community Center, to rebuild Coppo Baseball Field. The new facility, featuring additional seating, will serve as the home field for the New Canaan Rams Varsity Baseball Team, which previously played at Mead Park. The Junior Varsity team will move from Coppo Field to Mead Park.
The upgraded facility, designed to accommodate other New Canaan youth baseball teams and programs, is scheduled to open for play in April. This project is a collaboration between the Town, the private nonprofit New Canaan Athletic Foundation, and New Canaan Baseball.
The field is named in honor of Joe Coppo, a New Canaan resident and dedicated youth baseball coach who tragically lost his life in the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.
Outdoor Exercise Equipment
New outdoor exercise equipment has been installed near the parking area for the soccer fields and Orchard Softball Field, across from the mansion. The equipment is intended for individuals aged 13 and older. The old equipment is scheduled for removal in mid-December.
Outdoor Community Ice Rink
The Boucher Community Ice Rink at Waveny Park will open for its second year on December 1. Skating lessons for all ages and skate rentals for children will be available. For more details, visit ncrink.com.
Trail Upgrade
The walking trail section in Waveny Park that runs parallel to Lapham Road has been upgraded with fine crushed stone as part of the Town’s ongoing trail maintenance program.

On a rainy, not-so-cold day in Manhattan last week, I had the esteemed pleasure of interviewing one of New York City’s most iconic writers, Candace Bushnell
Bushnell became famous for detailing the realities of the treacherous dating scene in the city and now. Wanting to shield her Connecticut-residing parents from details of her sexcapades, she created an alter ego, Carrie Bradshaw. Bushnell still remains one of the most talked about characters in modern times. This Thursday, December 5th, Bushnell is leaving the city and returning to her home of Connecticut for one night only with her one-woman show "True Tales Of S*x, Success, and S*x and the City” at Fairfield Theatre Company (FTC) at 8 p.m.

Why Small Businesses Matter in New Canaan made possible by Fairfield County Bank! Let's DANCE! Meet Karlie Reitano, founder of NC Dance Clinics
Q: Why did you start your business?
A: I’ve always loved teaching and performing dance, but the inspiration for my business came when I noticed the excitement around dance tied to pop culture moments, like Taylor Swift’s music. I thought, “What if there was a way to harness that enthusiasm and create a fun, supportive environment where kids could dance to their favorite songs, learn new skills, and even perform for their community?” That idea quickly turned into reality with the launch of the Swiftie Dance Clinic in January 2024, and within six months, over 100 kids had participated!
As the clinics grew, I realized how much parents appreciated having a dance program that didn’t require a long-term commitment. That’s how NC Dance Clinics was born—a space where kids can experience the joy of dance on their own terms. This fall, we expanded into cheerleading, bringing on a collegiate cheerleading veteran to lead the program. It’s been incredibly rewarding to see the excitement from families. Adding spirit during the halftime of a New Canaan High School football game this fall was a highlight, showcasing what our program can offer to students, families and our community.
Whether it’s first-time dancers and cheerleaders or those looking to try something new, our focus is on fun, teamwork, and skill-building in a welcoming and flexible environment. Read our complete interview by clicking the link below.

Why Small Businesses Matter in New Canaan made possible by Fairfield County Bank. Meet Aya Forster, founder of Aya's Table - Aya's Tasty AF Hot Chili Oil
The foundation of Aya’s food philosophy is eating seasonally and locally. She believes in keeping it simple and allowing the main components of a dish to stand on their own. She tends to veer away from overcomplicating things with layers of flavors that conceal the taste of the actual ingredients. Aya consistently looks to local farms and farmer’s markets for inspiration in developing her next dish.
Aya was inspired to open her small business ... "When I made a small batch of chili oil for myself and started sharing with people who took my cooking classes. Through word of mouth, strangers started knocking on my door for chili oil, and so I turned it to a real, viable product."
Aya's Table gives a shout-out to several businesses that carry her products including New Canaan Butcher Shop Fjord Fish Market and Joe's Pizza New Canaan
Aya nominates New Canaan Butcher Shop to be featured next!

Why Small Businesses Matter puts a spotlight on the local merchants who donate their time, talent, goods, and services for the betterment of our community. The shop local movement spreads virally as local businesses who are “tagged” have the opportunity to share their story.

10/28/2024

Beginning Monday, November 4th, the Town of New Canaan Public Works will pick up leaves that have been raked to the curbside by homeowners, in areas of one-acre zoning or smaller, that are placed in a windrow, not a pile. The leaves will be recycled into garden compost, so they must be free of brush and debris and not be in plastic bags. These items are prohibited and will also clog the vacuums and hoses causing breakdowns and delays.
Leaves may be raked to the curbside until Sunday, December 1st. Leaves put out after that date will not be collected by the Town.
Residents in the 2- or 4-acre zones of town are requested to compost their leaves on their own property. DPW crews WILL NOT collect in those areas.
Residents, and yard maintenance contractors who are picking up leaves from New Canaan properties, may deposit leaves at the Town’s Composting Area located on Lapham Road near the entrance to Waveny Park.

New Canaan Department of Public Works is readying plans to begin the annual leaf collection program in the 1-acre and smaller zoned properties.
