As the holidays roll around, so does bowl season in college football. The Rutgers football team will compete against Kansas State in the Rate Bowl in Phonix, Arizona, on Thursday evening. The Scarlet Knights (7-5, 4-5) previously faced the Wildcats (8-4, 5-4) in the Texas Bowl in 2006, winning 37-10.

Head coach Greg Schiano will be looking for his seventh bowl win at Rutgers, and the writers here at The Daily Targum are mostly confident that hope will become a reality at Chase Field on Thursday.

As the Rutgers women’s soccer team continues to succeed, freshman midfielder Shaela Bradley and freshman defender Claire Hammill are already making their mark on the field. With standout performances early in their collegiate careers, Bradley and Hammill are setting the stage for a promising future on the Banks.

Hailing from different states, Bradley from Washington and Hammill from Michigan, both players have seamlessly integrated into the team, helping solidify the Scarlet Knights’ (11-4-5, 6-2-3) defensive strength and attacking core.

Despite the distance from home, Bradley and Hammill felt a strong connection with Rutgers when choosing a place to continue their careers.

The Rutgers football team has earned bowl eligibility for the second straight season after defeating Maryland 31-17 in College Park, Maryland Saturday night. For the 13th straight season and 15th time in 17 seasons, the Rutgers women’s soccer team is set to compete in the NCAA Tournament. On Saturday, the Scarlet Knights (11-4-5, 6-2-3) will host UConn at Yurcak Field on Busch campus.

Coming off a strong Big Ten Tournament run, where it reached the championship for the first time since 2021 but lost 5-0 to UCLA, Rutgers is determined to put that result in the rearview mirror against the Huskies (13-4-4, 4-3-3).

“The thing that’s important for us is that, look, we’re really proud of everything that we’ve accomplished,” said head coach Mike O’Neill. “We recognize it wasn’t a good day for us on Sunday, but just the enjoyment of watching them compete and win on Thursday ... is more important than the result.”

Key players, including senior defender Emily Mason and redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Olivia Bodmer, have been recognized for their performances this season. Mason earned a spot on the All-Big Ten First Team, and Bodmer was named to the Big Ten All-Tournament Team.

Senior 133-pounder Dylan Shawver was not expected to be a national title contender when he first came to Rutgers in 2020.

With an All-American occupying his weight class, Shawver had to earn his spot in the lineup and once he did, a season-ending injury seemed to erase all the progress and growth he had worked so hard to achieve. But Shawver, a Big Ten champion and All-American, ultimately prevailed and is destined for even greater achievements this season.

Shawver wrestled for the first time as a Scarlet Knight on Jan. 24, 2021, against Ohio State, making his collegiate debut in the extra matches following the dual. He earned a 9-4 victory, the first of many wins to follow for the Lorain, Ohio, product.

Before this season, junior midfielder Allie Post had only started eight games in her collegiate career on the Rutgers women’s soccer team.

This year, though, she has burst onto the scene. Post has appeared in 18 games and made 15 starts, becoming one of the squad’s top goal-scorers.

Post was a top prospect coming out of Governor Livingston High School. She was a 2021 ECNL national semi-finalist with PDA and a four-year first-team All-Conference selection with plenty more accolades to add to her name. She stayed in her home state after graduating, officially committing to becoming a part of the Scarlet Knights (11-3-4, 6-2-3) program.

Nicknamed “3J” for his shooting, Hayes is 6-foot-6 from Waconia, Minnesota. The 5th-year wing brings experience and a winning mentality to Rutgers men’s basketball this season.

“I got a lot to prove,” Hayes said.

It’s all about the freshmen.

Guard Dylan Harper and forward Ace Bailey are bringing unprecedented hype and a whole lot of friendship to Rutgers men’s basketball.

The Scarlet Knights bringing in two five-star recruits is uncharted territory, but with the connection Harper and Bailey have, no one should be surprised that they came to Piscataway together.

“It was never always about basketball … (We) call, FaceTime, stuff like that,” Harper said. “We’ve been best of friends. We talk every day now — even before we got to campus … we were always talking. The love we have is the loyalty we got for each other.”

You can dread it or run from it. It doesn’t matter because destiny arrives all the same.

The Rutgers women’s basketball team’s leading scorer from last season returns for her second year on the Banks. Senior guard and forward Destiny Adams is back to captain a Scarlet Knights team looking to bounce back in 2024.

Hailing from Manchester, New Jersey, Adams was a former Gatorade New Jersey Girls Basketball Player of the Year and the 20th-ranked player in ESPNW’s Class of 2021 rankings. After a legendary high school career in Jersey, she took her talents to North Carolina.

When graduate student 285-pounder Yaraslau Slavikouski entered the transfer portal on April 3, fans of the Rutgers wrestling team were shocked. Head coach Scott Goodale thought he had lost his starter at heavyweight, the program’s first All-American at that weight class since 1964.

“Usually you go in the portal, you don’t come out,” Goodale said. “He’s not from this country, this was an opportunity for him, he did that. Fortunately, he came back and we’re glad to have him, I can tell you that.”

It was a surprising turn of events – after earning All-American honors at the NCAA Championships on March 23, Slavikouski was asked if he would return for his final year of eligibility.

“That’s the plan,” he told the media. So, the confusion was justified when the news that Slavikouski had decided to enter the transfer portal broke. But 26 days later, Slavikouski decided to come back to the Banks for his final season as a Scarlet Knight.

Junior center Emmanuel Ogbole is ready to take charge as the leading center of the Rutgers men’s basketball team after the departure of Clifford Omoruyi.

Before joining the Scarlet Knights, Ogbole attended Excel Model Secondary School in Nigeria. But Ogbole did not start playing basketball until he was 18 years old after graduating high school.

This introduction to basketball resulted from Ogbole’s invitation to a camp hosted by Toronto Raptors President Masai Ujiri.

“I was privileged to attend the Giants of Africa camp hosted by Masai Ujiri,” Ogbole said. “In 2018, I attended the camp. I wasn’t really good. I just had the size and everything. I didn’t really have much skills. All I could do was dunk the ball and maybe give a few passes.”

Speedy, creative and elusive are just some ways to describe freshman guard Kiyomi McMiller. After a season filled with struggles, the Rutgers women’s basketball team has one of the best offensive guards in the 2024 recruiting class playing in the backcourt.

Aside from an exhibition game, McMiller has yet to play for the Scarlet Knights, but the hype among fans has grown since her commitment, and for good reason. At Life Center Academy in Burlington, New Jersey, McMiller amassed 2,015 points, 437 rebounds and 363 assists in her career.

Basketball has been a part of McMiller’s life from a young age, with ties to the game all around her family. Most notably, McMilller’s mother, Ravilia McMiller, played for Mount Saint Mary’s, has coached at the high school level and is the co-founder of a player development program called Off Season Athletics, LLC.

For the last time at Yurcak Field on Busch campus in 2024, the Rutgers men’s soccer team defeated Maryland 3-1 on Tuesday night. The Scarlet Knights (5-9-2, 2-6-1) ended their four-game winless streak in style, handing the Terrapins (8-3-5, 5-2-2) their second straight defeat.

It was Rutgers’ second-ranked win of the season after defeating then-No. 8-ranked Wisconsin on the road in early October. As for No. 10 Maryland, a team ranked as high as No. 2 in the country last week after going 12 games undefeated, has now lost back-to-back games and seems to have lost its chance at a regular season Big Ten title.

Early chances for the home team came from sophomore defender Devon Stopek, who came inches away from scoring his first collegiate goal but dipped his shot over the crossbar, and senior midfielder Curt Calov, who blasted a free kick right into the hands of Terrapins goalkeeper Laurin Mack.

Known for his versatility and defensive tenacity, junior guard Jordan Derkack hopes to impact both ends of the court in his first year with the Rutgers men’s basketball team.

After a standout career at Merrimack, where he won the Northeast Conference (NEC) Player of the Year and NEC Defensive Player of the Year awards, Derkack was the top player for the Warriors and is expected to become a vital role player for the Scarlet Knights.

Although Derkack never attended a Rutgers basketball game growing up, his journey began just 25 minutes from campus. He played at Spire Academy in Ohio as well as Colonia High School in Colonia, New Jersey, where he was named to the all-conference team his senior season. Despite his success, Derkack remained unranked as a prospect before committing to Merrimack.

Graduate student guard Tyson Acuff is preparing to bring his veteran leadership to the Rutgers men’s basketball team.

The 6-foot-4 Detroit, Michigan, product began his collegiate career at Duquesne and averaged 5.7 points per game and 2.9 rebounds per game as a second-year freshman before transferring back home to play at Eastern Michigan.

Last season, he averaged 21.7 points per game and 3.6 rebounds per game with the Eagles and was the nation’s seventh-leading scorer.

Aside from being a prolific scorer, Acuff is eager to display other aspects of his game.

Senior defender Joey Zalinsky was only a sophomore when the Rutgers men’s soccer team won its first Big Ten Championship in 2022, but he was far from inexperienced.

Hailing from Brick, New Jersey, Zalinsky did not play high school soccer for Brick Memorial High School. Instead, he committed his time to the New York Red Bulls Academy, eventually becoming a starter for New York Red Bulls II in 2021.

With offers to play collegiate soccer for the Scarlet Knights, Syracuse and Louisville, Zalinsky chose to stay in New Jersey and close to home.

10/16/2024

You would be hard-pressed to find a Rutgers wrestling fan who isn’t excited for the 2024-2025 season. After all, the Scarlet Knights had their first Big Ten champion since 2019 and produced two All-Americans last season.

Looking ahead to this season, Rutgers returns 9 of its 10 starters and brings in the No. 4 recruiting class, the program’s highest since 2007-2008.

In the offseason, associate head coach Donny Pritzlaff left the program to become the head coach of Columbia. Despite the change in the coaching staff, head coach Scott Goodale still has long-time assistant coaches Joe Pollard and Steve Mytych. Mikey Labriola, a five-time All-American, was brought in as an assistant coach in August.

The Knights ended last season ranked No. 14 in the country and are expected to finish around that number again this season. But Goodale is no longer satisfied with that expectation – he wants the program to take a step forward this season.
