Last week, Bishop Mariann Edgar Budde delivered a powerful sermon at the National Prayer Service, asking Trump to “have mercy upon the people in our country who are scared now.” For her empathy and goodness, she has received backlash and hatred.

To help counter that negativity, 27 local volunteers gathered at Craven County Democratic Headquarters Thursday afternoon to write messages of hope and gratitude to Bishop Budde. In total, they penned 153 personal thank you cards to her, each with the name of a friend or family member who had granted permission for them to do so.

In addition, volunteers also wrote close to 100 invitations for the William L. Wainwright dinner, our annual fundraiser that brings together Democrats from throughout Craven County.

The Party will be hosting many opportunities for friendship and solidarity this year – we hope you will join us to discuss issues and take action. In the words of Bishop Budde, “If we are silent, then we are complicit.”

Attorney General Jeff Jackson just filed a lawsuit to stop the federal funding freeze, which could impact funds for western NC recovery, jobs, law enforcement, health care, and food assistance.

“This sudden freeze in federal funding is so sweeping that it could cause widespread and immediate harm across our state – delaying disaster recovery in our western counties, undercutting law enforcement, and affecting children and veterans. It violates constitutional power over federal spending, and I'm taking legal action to stop it.” - Attorney General Jackson

From our friends at NC Women Forward, a reminder to take care of yourself (and each other):

Wise and important words from sociologist Jennifer Walter about what is happening in our country right now and what to do about it:

"As a sociologist, I need to tell you that your being overwhelmed is the goal.

1/ The flood of 200+ executive orders in Trump's first days exemplifies Naomi Klein's "shock doctrine" - using chaos and crisis to push through radical changes while people are too disoriented to effectively resist. This isn't just politics as usual - it's a strategic exploitation of cognitive limits.
2/ Media theorist [Marshall] McLuhan predicted this: When humans face information overload, they become passive and disengaged. The rapid-fire executive orders create a cognitive bottleneck, making it nearly impossible for citizens and media to thoroughly analyze any single policy.
3/ Agenda-setting theory explains the strategy: When multiple major policies compete for attention simultaneously, it fragments public discourse. Traditional media can't keep up with the pace, leading to superficial coverage.
The result? Weakened democratic oversight and reduced public engagement.

What now?

1/ Set boundaries: Pick 2-3 key issues you deeply care about and focus your attention there. You can't track everything - that's by design. Impact comes from sustained focus, not scattered awareness.
2/ Use aggregators & experts: Find trusted analysts who do the heavy lifting of synthesis. Look for those explaining patterns, not just events.
3/ Remember: Feeling overwhelmed is the point. When you recognize this, you regain some power. Take breaks. Process. This is a marathon.
4/ Practice going slow: Wait 48hrs before reacting to new policies. The urgent clouds the important. Initial reporting often misses context
5/ Build community: Share the cognitive load. Different people track different issues. Network intelligence beats individual overload.

Remember: They want you scattered. Your focus is resistance."
