Temperatures will be the big story this week. We'll start and end the week with highs near 50°. But as we've seen since the beginning of the year, 15° below average high temperatures will return for the middle of the week in spite of completely sunny skies.

We'll get to near 60° this weekend, but with rain instead of sunshine.

A strong low pressure will cross the state today before exiting off the coast by sunset. This will create gusty southwest wind ahead of it near the coast. This will cause a wide variance in temperatures between the Crystal Coast and deep inland areas.

The cold that returns and lasts through the rest of the week.

The cold will hold through the weekend as another direct discharge of Arctic air settles in. Gusty winds will cause minor issues on Ocracoke tonight.

Those same gusty winds will create a fire danger threat for Saturday.

I'm keeping an eye on early Monday morning when a low pressure comes north out of the Gulf of Mexico. Depending on the track and timing of the arrival of the precipitation, there could be a minor window for some wintry mix across our far northern counties. Right now I'm not anticipating any issues, but could see how forecast changes might align for issues to occur.

After a brief warm up for that system on Monday, more Arctic air takes over for much below normal temperatures most of next week.
