"Pillow shots" like the one featured here from AN AUTUMN AFTERNOON are seemingly random shots of everyday life that, like pillow words in poetry, provide a short addendum to a line that reflects or possibly shifts the meaning of what is to come.

Ozu was concerned with the affairs of everyday life, and his pillow shots often provide subtle commentary on the fast changing culture around him in post-war Japan.
