A post on social media brought new potholes on the Blackiston Mill Bridge to the attention of the Floyd County Commissioners and the Floyd County Sheriff’s Office. These potholes were likely the result of the recent snow and ice and temperatures that have caused the surface to freeze and thaw repeatedly in a short period of time.

The bridge was closed temporarily so the potholes could be patched. The bridge is now open, and drivers are encouraged to proceed with care, but remain alert. Out of an abundance of caution, additional work will be performed on the bridge on Monday, January 13 after morning rush hour, during which time the bridge will be temporarily closed to all traffic.

If you see a pothole that presents a danger to vehicles, the fastest way to see the situation corrected is to notify either the Floyd County Commissioners or Floyd County Sheriff's Office - IN immediately. Thank you for working with us to keep county roads and drivers safe.

Super interesting tidbit from Harrison County Highway Department.🧂❄️

Our salt pile is quite a bit smaller, but is holding on. We ordered another 600 ton of treated salt this morning.

Some background information for those that find it interesting:

Our salt is purchased through an INDOT state-wide bid and the treated salt this year is $104.23/ton. Treated salt has liquid magnesium chloride added to it to help it work at lower temperatures than plain salt. Our price for plain salt this year is $85.95/ton.

Our salt budget for 2025 is $240,000 and is funded from our Local Road and Street fund. From 2019-2023 we’ve averaged spending $219,000 each year. Hopefully the snow will settle down and we’ll drift back toward average!
