What is Hill Country Network?

The North Mississippi we love lines up with the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains. These red clay hills are rich in predominantly Scottish, Irish, and African cultural roots, and is unique to its very core in its heritage of strong backs and strong attitudes. Residents with roots take comfort in what our grannies and grandpappies taught us. Think about the imprinting of the depression in our rural neck of the woods, as opposed to city life in America. Like a friend from New York observed, being poor did not mean the same to them as it did to us. To us, not having money did not make one poor. We were rich in family, rich in community, rich in stories and song... and everyone had a garden or access to one, access to chickens, eggs, pigs, cows and for most, a musical instrument. Neighbors shared. Church was the social network and gatherings kept everyone informed. The women folk were mostly family homemakers until the 1950s. They stayed home and made the home the hub of life. They were teachers, homeschooling on survival, giving their heirs roots and wings, growing tomorrow into a better world for their descendents. Life was slower then, so there was much more time to visit, remembering the older ways and planning for the future ways. Women were the anchors, birthing and raising their children and sometimes giving their young to fight to keep their country free and brave. They lived sustainable lives, past the needs of survival. They were strong of back, strong on Grace and guided by God. There was no other way. Capital punishment and prayer in school set the boundaries, to allow freedom within those boundaries that kept the "commies" out. In the yin and yang of survival, choosing to maintain Southern standards kept the stranger at bay until proven acceptable...and that might take a few generations in any one small town. Proteus Media and TV99 have established a charge for marking this space in time, by documenting the moment of today and connecting it back through and to its true heritage. Documenting the voices of our soldiers, of our spokespersons, of our recorders of times, our singers and songwriters, our poets and artisans, our artists and craftsmen, our story tellers, our native plant growers and our keepers of the rites. We know that history is not what was, but what is written. Let's embrace with joy the truth of what was, and know in our hearts that this moment is all there is. You can help us see and show the good in the stories and our heritage. We are here NOW. Ready to move forward? If you have a story we want to hear it. If you have a suggestion, we want to help make it happen.
