Nevis School Board gets update
on summer facility improvements

By Nate Bachleitner
The Nevis School Board held its regular monthly meeting on Monday, July 26 in the school media center with all members present except Maggie Stacy.
During the meeting the board heard from Facilities Manager Dustin Wroolie who gave an update on a busy summer at the school and some of the improvements that have been made to the facility.
“It's been a crazy busy summer, trying to get the school back to normal after a year of Covid,” Wroolie said. “We have been trying to get the classrooms back to normal size, moving desks and other things out of storage. We still have a ton of stuff in storage.”
Wroolie told the board that the custodian crew has been very busy trying to get all of the floors waxed, and some classrooms will be receiving new carpet. The carpet is currently back-ordered, but is expected to arrive some time in August. He said that they have also been busy removing all of the plexiglass barriers that were installed last summer. “In general, it's a lot of projects.”
Wroolie told the board that the custodian crew is also waiting for some new desks to arrive, and that they have to figure out how many desks they need to place in each classroom (not every room gets new desks).
Projects that have already been completed this summer include- painted the third grade room, the computer lab and the seventh grade lockers, crack sealed the parking lot, painted the elementary hall and all of those lockers.
Regarding the elementary hall project, Wroolie said, “I'm kinda excited about this one. It was a pretty big project! When you walk down the hall its looks like something elementary kids would pick out, as far as the colors. The first time I looked at it I thought – Oof! that's different! – but it kinda grows on you. I'm hoping everyone likes it.”
A new flag pole was purchased and installed outside of the school, and the torn wall padding in Tiger Arena has been replaced.
Wroolie also told the board about other projects that are still in the works and expected to be completed closer to fall. They are in the process of installing a French drain close to the elementary sidewalk ramp. The reasoning for the new drain is that they typically have a lot of ice build up in that location when the snow starts to melt, and this new drain should help reduce the amount of ice that forms there. There are also plans in place to widen the sidewalk on the high school side and between the playgrounds.
They also have plans to add spray foam insulation to both wings of the bus garage, replace the roof over the small gym, and install a gate at the sand volleyball court.
Wroolie said that he hopes that by next summer (2022) they will be able to replace all 87 unit vents in the school, and to upgrade the unit that was installed in 1987, which would allow the system to be electronically controlled. The new unit would also be tied into the hydraulic heating system, which uses hot water heat instead of steam, which also gives the option to upgrade to a hot water plant instead of the steam plant that is currently used. Each unit will also have a heat pump and separate condensation units on the roof. Those units will allow them to heat some rooms when the boiler system isn't turned on, and to have some control over the level of humidity in the building during the summer.
Wroolie ended his presentation with praise for his staff. “I am very fortunate to have the team I have; I am very grateful for that,” he said.
The board thanked Dustin for his all of his hard work, and for a very thorough update on all of the work being done this summer.
Other business
In other business on Monday, July 26, the Nevis School Board:
•Heard from district residents Alfred Kleinke and Joyce Krueger, who shared concerns about the proposed new Social Studies standards and the teaching of the Critical Race Theory (CRT) at the Nevis School. The members of the board had no comment, as there is not a final draft in place at this time.
•Accepted the resignation of Social Studies teacher Richard Johnson. He has reportedly accepted a position elsewhere.
•Accepted a quote for gasoline from Luetgers Oil Company (T&M) for the 2021-22 school year. The quote was six cents below the price on the pump.

•Approved an inclement weather electronic learning plan.

•Approved a contract with Music teacher Jake Upton.
•Heard from Student representative Jade Rypkema, who reported that the Nevis Babe Ruth team advanced to the state tournament. Nevis placed second during the football passing tournament the Tigers hosted on July 17. The NHS Student Council will begin planning for the new school year as soon as their new advisors are assigned.
•Heard from Principal Brian Michaelson that the hiring process for the coming school year is ongoing. The staff has finalized the high school and elementary schedules. The Summer Adventures program continues to go strong, averaging 85-87 kids. They are preparing for the August in-service, a new staff workshop is set for August 31, a teacher workday and Open House will be held on September 1, and a teacher workshop will be held on September 2. Students will return on Tuesday, September 7.
The next regular meeting of the Nevis School Board is scheduled to be held on Monday, August 23 at 7:00 p.m. in the Media Center.

By Nate Bachleitner

The Nevis PTA is sponsoring two fun Halloween activities for children this year. The first activity is a costume contest, and the second is a rock hunting contest.
The costume contest will be held virtually. Local children are asked to dress up and show off their Halloween costumes by taking a photo of themselves and submitting it to the Nevis PTA. The photo can be submitted to the Nevis PTA either through their page (Nevis PTA) or by emailing the photo(s) to [email protected].
The children that are allowed to enter the contest must be enrolled in Pre-K through Grade 6. Parents of children participating in the contest must also sign a photo release form, which will be emailed after the photo(s) are submitted.
The second activity provided will include a rock hunt. Local children will have the joy of trying to locate special rocks that are located around the City of Nevis. Those locations include Muskie Park, the Pollinator Garden, Halverson Park and the Frisbee Golf Course on the west end of town.
The 50 rocks that the kids will be searching for have all been placed in strategic locations so they won’t get covered with snow. The rocks will be painted either blue or pink, and will feature a Jack-o-lantern face painted on the front, and a number on the back that will correspond with a prize category. There are 30 possible prizes for the kids to win! There will be 10 small prizes, 10 medium prizes, 9 large prizes, and one grand prize!
To redeem the rocks for prizes, treasure hunters will have to take a picture of themselves with their rock and send it to the Nevis PTA. When sending the photo of a winning rock, contestants are also asked to include a mailing address so the prize can be shipped to their home. The prizes will be mailed to the winners to comply with the social distancing guidelines that are in effect for the current pandemic.
Good luck finding the rocks, and have a fun/safe Halloween!
