“Look, Kodah! It’s us!”

Nevada, Iowa has so much to offer, and for 29-year-old Joshua Benda, it offered the opportunity to be closer to some friends, have a second bedroom, and save on his rent after moving here from Ames in August of 2022.
Maybe you’ve seen Joshua recently, walking around town with his new roommate, Kodah Alexander Hamilton, a 4-year-old German Shepard/Heeler mix that he adopted from the Animal Rescue League in Marshalltown.
“We’ve had many long talks, long walks, and snuggles,” he said of his canine companion. “He has helped my mental health and motivated me to go outside, even in the cold, and go for walks!”
Originally from Toledo, Iowa, Joshua said he likes Nevada’s small-town feel, a place where you can be comfortable to be out walking and interacting with your neighbors. And, “I love how it’s still only 15 minutes from Ames.”
Joshua is an interesting young man, who has traveled the world, and runs his own business creating reels and videos for businesses and organizations. “I work as a digital media specialist, focusing on creating digital content for businesses in video and social media posts,” he said.
He’s always working on interesting projects, and even gets into working on print product design. He has a multi-page Lincoln Highway travel guide he designed several years ago for Prairie Rivers of Iowa in Ames among the things in his portfolio.
Homeschooled, Joshua said he attended South Tama High School for band, choir and theater, and after finishing high school, he moved to Hawaii for two years to study film. He also worked in India for three months at the Mother Teresa Home.
One of his most rewarding professional projects, he said, was documenting “The Wall That Heals.” This traveling memorial came through Marshalltown last year.
“It is a replica of the Vietnam Memorial Wall, so loved ones can come to visit and learn about the history of the wall,” Joshua explained.
At the time the memorial came through Marshalltown, Joshua was working for a company that was asked to document the traveling exhibit for the three days it was in Iowa. “Not only did it honor me to help provide marketing for this event in the future, but the video is one of my favorites, due to its cinematography and music composition.”

If you have an hour to watch anything on TV, what are you watching?
“Oh, that’s hard. I watch “Criminal Minds,” “The People’s Court,” or “Encanto” on Disney+.”

What is your favorite type of food to go out and eat?
“I love seafood and steak! And I love Subway...my taste is weird, I know.”

What hobbies/pastimes do you enjoy outside of work?
“Some of my pastimes and hobbies are watching movies, watching Broadway shows, and reading.”

What is your favorite place in the world (or even just here in Iowa) to visit?
“That's a hard one! I have not been able to travel as much as I'd like to, but if I had to pick a few places, I'd have to say Hawaii was one of my favorite places to visit. I also loved visiting the Taj Mahal when I lived in India as well as sleeping and living in the Darjeeling Mountains.”

What type of music do you most enjoy listening to?
“I love listening to Broadway (currently obsessed with Hamilton) and old Disney music, as well as a mixture of country, pop, etc.”
