Man, that sure was a lot of snow last night! We have reports of 6-7 inches on Newt Drive east of Neosho, and the same amounts on Hammer west of town. What's it look like where you're at, and how much snow did you get?

Here are some pics of our drive around Neosho this morning, including McKinney Street, Lime Kiln Drive, Ripley, etc.

⚠️ Here are the expected onset times for the winter weather moving in today. Snow will begin in southwest Missouri as early as 3pm and move northeastward through Friday morning.

⚠️ While most of the state will see at least measurable snow, the highest totals are expected across southern MO where locally higher amounts of 3-6 inches are possible.

⚠️ Impacts are not expected to be as severe as the most recent winter storm, but remember that even minor accumulations can make travel hazardous. Follow your local forecast for updates and expect a slow, snowy commute Friday morning!

UPDATE ON APPROACHING WINTER WEATHER!!!

THURSDAY, Jan. 9, 12:52 p.m. — Just received this from Charla Geller, director of the Newton County Office of Emergency Management:

"An update on the winter weather moving into our area. The exact timing is still unknown, expect between 2-4 p.m., and lasting through Friday morning. Moderate roadway impacts are expected. Use extra caution when driving.

"As this system is moving across Oklahoma, there are reports of roads becoming slick nearly immediately, with about half an inch of accumulation fairly quickly. The cold temperatures we have seen over the past week indicate Newton County is also expected to see rapid accumulation.

"The same with rainfall, we should expect to see the snowfall occur within 'bands of precipitation' and therefore some parts of the county will see more snow than others. Newton County is expected to see an average between 3-6 inches of snowfall by the time the system moves out of the area."

The snow expected this evening and overnight is expected to develop in bands, meaning that amounts will vary over short distances. This map shows area averages for accumulations, though areas under snow bands could see more, and those outside of those bands could see less.

Light snow will continue to move through the area overnight, dropping additional amounts up to one inch. This will continue to aggravate road conditions with hazardous road conditions likely. Snow will end from west to east overnight. Winds will continue to gust up to 40 mph at times. Use extreme caution if traveling overnight.

Major winter storm event forecast for this weekend

Road conditions expected to be impossible, motorists should avoid travel

JEFFERSON CITY – The National Weather Service is warning of Missouri’s first major snow event across the state this weekend including impossible travel conditions and the potential for tree damage and power outages due to ice. The Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) is advising travelers to avoid traveling during the winter storm.

Wintry precipitation is expected to start Saturday afternoon in western Missouri and last into Monday morning before exiting east of Missouri. The storm is expected to produce a mix of wintry weather. Snow is expected in the northern half of the state potentially producing more than a foot of snow. Wind gusts of 30+mph are expected.

Freezing rain is forecasted in the southern portion of Missouri with the central portion of the state expecting a combination of ice, sleet and snow. The storm is also expected to bring bitterly cold temperatures on Monday, which limit the effectiveness of chemical treatments on the roads.

“This winter storm has the potential to create extremely hazardous driving conditions for most of the state,” said MoDOT Chief Safety and Operations Officer Becky Allmeroth. “We urge all drivers to plan to arrive at their destinations ahead of the storm and be prepared to stay there. It is expected to impact Monday morning’s commute as well. If you can, stay home and give us room to work. Remember, every stranded car slows down the snowplow’s ability to clear the roads and prevents emergency vehicles from reaching their destinations.”

MoDOT urges anyone who must travel in the storm to use extra caution during and after the precipitation: slow down for the conditions, buckle up, and avoid distractions such as using a handheld device while driving – it’s the law.

Travelers are also urged to be especially cautious on elevated surfaces such as bridges and overpasses. Drivers should also plan ahead for their Monday morning commute: watch local forecasts for updates and delay travel until conditions improve.

Should you be involved in a minor crash or slide off the road, remain in your vehicle with the seat belt buckled. Equip your vehicle with a winter weather emergency kit before you travel in winter weather. Include any necessary medication, a phone charger, a blanket, bottled water, nonperishable foods and a flashlight. For more items to include in a winter weather emergency kit, visit modot.org/winter.

Across the state, MoDOT has approximately 1,500 snow trucks that will be operating with crews working 12-hour shifts from before the snow starts until roads are in a mostly clear condition after the snow ends.

Missouri road conditions are available 24/7 on the Traveler Information Map at https://traveler.modot.org/map/.

Today, Governor Mike Parson confirmed that the State of Missouri will carry out the sentence of Chis Collings on Tuesday, Dec. 3, as ordered by the Supreme Court of Missouri.

"Mr. Collings has received every protection afforded by the Missouri and United States Constitutions, and Mr. Collings' conviction and sentence remain for his horrendous and callous crime," Governor Parson said. "The State of Missouri will carry out Mr. Collings’ sentence according to the Court's order and deliver justice."

Collings abducted nine-year-old Rowan Ford, of Stella, on Nov. 3, 2007, r***d her, and strangled her with chicken wire before throwing her into a sinkhole. Collings confessed to this abhorrent offense multiple times to numerous law enforcement officers, and evidence matching his statements was found at his residence.

There is not and never has been any doubt about Collings’ involvement or the heinousness of his crimes. Nor has Collings’ conviction or sentence ever been reversed on appeal. Collings’ case has been reviewed in the state trial court, Missouri Supreme Court, federal district court, Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals, and United States Supreme Court.
