Juneteenth, a monumental day in the history and culture of African Americans, is marked by celebrations of all kinds across the nation, and commemorates the end of slavery in the United States.

On June 19, 1865, nearly two years after President Abraham Lincoln emancipated enslaved Africans in America, Union troops arrived in Galveston Bay, Texas with news of freedom. More than 250,000 African Americans embraced freedom by executive decree in what became known as Juneteenth or Freedom Day. With the principles of self-determination, citizenship, and democracy magnifying their hopes and dreams, those Texans held fast to the promise of true liberty for all.

We are pleased to announce our featured entertainment for the 2024 Legacy Ball, Eric Benét. Be sure to secure your tickets for this year's Legacy Ball - there are limited seats remaining! Visit www.legacyball.org to RSVP today!

Eric Benét is a contemporary R&B singer with mild hip-hop and strong adult contemporary influences. As a teenager, he performed in a family vocal group (aptly named Benét) with his sister and cousin. The group signed with EMI and released an eponymous album in 1992 that largely went unnoticed. Eric blazed his own trail as a solo artist shortly afterward, signing to Warner Bros. and releasing his debut album, True to Myself, in the fall of 1996. A Day in the Life followed in 1999. Its first single, a cover of Toto's "Georgy Porgy," was a moderate radio hit, but it was the album's second single, "Spend My Life with You" (featuring Tamia), that helped put him on the map.

On Memorial Day, we honor the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom and safety. We also reflect on the sacrifices made by their families and communities. Let us be thankful for their service, not just today but throughout the year. Their courage and dedication will never be forgotten.

The June lessons are collectively titled, “Experiencing Hope,” and the five lessons are drawn from the books of Colossians, 2 Corinthians, Romans, Hebrews, and Acts. These lessons reinforce that hope and trust in God can sustain us through suffering, transform our lives, foster unity, and provide a secure foundation in God’s unchanging promises.

The first lesson “Hope amidst Suffering,” teaches us that enduring suffering with faith can reveal God’s greater purpose and bring hope to others.

The second lesson “Reflecting God’s Spirit,” encourages us to embrace the freedom and transformation that come from living by the Spirit, reflecting God’s glory.

Lesson three “Hope amidst Differences,” underscores that hope and encouragement come from God, helping us to live in unity despite our differences.

Lesson four “God Is Trustworthy,” reminds us that God’s faithfulness and promises are unchanging, providing a firm foundation for our trust.

Lesson five “Hope In God Transforms Us,” highlights that no matter one’s past, hope in God can lead to a radical and positive transformation.

After more than a century of impactful fellowship, spiritual growth, and community engagement, the National Baptist Congress, hosted by R.H. Boyd, is on hiatus. Over the years, this esteemed event has served as a beacon of unity and empowerment for our community, fostering connections and promoting the values that define our shared faith.

Given the transitions since 2020—global pandemic, changing leadership, church attendance trends, and more—it is in R.H. Boyd’s best interest to focus on other areas of our business that will better serve our customers.

The National Baptist Congress has played a pivotal role in shaping the lives of countless individuals, fostering a sense of community, and deepening spiritual connections. As we reflect on the memories and achievements of this remarkable event, we express our heartfelt gratitude to all those who have contributed to its success over the past century.

In light of this transition, we are excited to endorse the National Missionary Baptist Convention of America’s (NMBCA) National Youth Retreat, scheduled to take place from July 11–13, 2024, in Southlake, TX.

The National Missionary Baptist Convention of America has a rich history of fostering spiritual growth and community engagement, aligning with the values that have been the cornerstone of the National Baptist Congress.

“We look forward to a collaborative effort between NMBCA and the R.H. Boyd Family of Companies to bring about a successful experience,” said host Pastor Denny D. Davis.

The retreat will provide an opportunity for our youth to gather, worship, and participate in various workshops centered around spoken word, mime ministries, praise dance, drill team technique classes, and performances.

On Mother's Day, we honor and celebrate the incredible strength and love of mothers and mother figures everywhere. May our hearts be prayerful toward those yearning for motherhood, offering them hope and encouragement. May those who carry the weight of loss find solace and healing in the arms of compassion and support. May God encourage the mothers who press ahead faithfully, even in the face of their challenges.

“Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: ‘Many women do noble things, but you surpass them all.’” Proverbs 31: 28–29 (NIV)

The May lessons are collectively titled, “Standing in the Faith,” and the four lessons are drawn from the book of Romans. These lessons weave a narrative of faith, humility, endurance, and evangelism, forming the foundation of Christian teachings on righteousness and salvation.

- The first lesson “No Need to Boast,” explores the Christian principle of humility, emphasizing that boasting in one's own works is unnecessary because justification comes through faith.

-The second lesson “For Our Sake,” expands on this theme, illustrating how faith, rather than deeds, brings righteousness, using Abraham's faith as a prime example.

-Lesson three “Remaining Strong,” shifts to endurance and resilience, teaching believers to find strength and hope in challenging times through their faith.

-Lesson four “Hearing and Believing,” stresses the importance of both hearing and believing in the Gospel, urging followers to spread the message of salvation to all.

We are excited to award the Matthew Walker Comprehensive Health Center with our 2024 R.H. Boyd Humanitarian Award at this year's Legacy Ball.

Matthew Walker Comprehensive Health Center (MWCHC) is a non-profit medical center providing affordable and quality healthcare to patients in the Middle Tennessee and surrounding areas. Founded in 1968 by Dr. Matthew Walker, the center has grown from a single facility to a community staple of medical, dental, nutritional, and behavioral health. Now in its 56th year, MWCHC remains an organization dedicated to saving lives and reaching communities.

MWCHC’s initial focus was to offer a wide range of health services including adult and child medical and dental care to the medically underserved people of Middle Tennessee with an emphasis on the maintenance of good health, not simply the treatment of disease.

Today, MWCHC has three locations (Nashville, Clarksville, and Smyrna) and employs 150 medical staff. The center provides quality and affordable care for all patients both insured and uninsured with comprehensive services including family planning, obstetrical care, pediatric care, internal medicine, dental services, radiology services, gynecological care, family practice, behavioral health, social services, and insurance assistance. MWCHC also has a full-service pharmacy, lab services and a Second Harvest-approved food pantry at the Nashville location. It has expanded its services to include a mobile unit that reaches farther into rural Middle Tennessee.

The organization also partners with Saint Thomas Health/Ascension and the University of Tennessee Health Science Center for an Advanced Education in General Dentistry (AEGD) residency program, furthering the organization’s dedication to training future professionals.

MWCHC is dedicated to providing state-of-the-art care to all patients regardless of economic status, with its three facilities reaching 16,000 thousand patients a year. From Dr. Walker’s original vision to celebrating its impact 56 years later, MWCHC remains a vital community
resource and institution."

We are excited to celebrate Slim and Husky's as our 2024 R.H. Boyd Excellence Award recipient at the Legacy Ball.

Slim + Husky’s Pizza debuted on the Northside of Nashville, TN, in spring 2017 and was the birthchild of Clint Gray, Emanuel (EJ) Reed and Derrick Moore, three longtime friends and Tennessee State University Alums. The trio started as business partners and after successfully selling their first venture in a $1.7 million deal, they were able to open the business they always dreamed of - a hip-hop inspired spot featuring artisan pizzas.

Slim + Husky’s instantly received National attention and praise for opening its 1st location on Buchanan Street, more popularly known for being located in zip code 37208, home to the country’s highest incarnation rate, at the time. Being the first business to build back economy in a neighborhood riddled in crime and a poor reputation, Gray, Reed, and Moore were intentional about giving back to the community by providing jobs people could walk to and an accessible place people could eat, which was lacking to the neighborhood, as well. Slim + Husky’s Pizza served as a bridge to engage the community.

To everyone's surprise, Slim + Husky's opened on day one to a line stretching down the street with people anxious to try the pizza and help do their part to stimulate the community.

Now in operation for several years, the brand has grown to include 15 locations across the U.S., in markets including Nashville, Atlanta, Memphis, Murfreesboro, Sacramento, and Chattanooga.

Each of the founders serve in capacities that align with their professional background and talents. Clint Gray serves as chief marketing officer, Emanuel (EJ) Reed serves as chief executive officer and Derrick Moore serves as chief development officer. Their mantra, “Pizza Rules Everything Around Me” (PREAM), fuels the founders to use food as a vehicle for social change.

Make sure to visit www.legacyball.org to secure your tickets for the Legacy Ball and to celebrate the achievements and contributions of Slim + Husky's and its founders with us!

Over the nest few days we'll be introducing honorees, entertainment, and our chairs for the 2024 Legacy Ball.

We are honored to present this year's R.H. Boyd Service Award to Dr. Adrienne Battle, Director of Metro Nashville Public Schools. A Nashville native, Dr. Battle is a graduate of the district’s John Overton High School, Missouri State University and Tennessee State University, where she earned her master’s, education specialist and doctorate degrees in Educational Administration and Supervision.

Under her leadership, MNPS was named a Level 5 district - the highest achievement - in the Tennessee Value Added Assessment System in both 2022 and 2023, and the district recently received national recognition in the Education Recovery Scorecard for its work on post-pandemic academic recovery, with Top 10 rankings among large urban districts for growth in both reading and math from 2022 to 2023.

Dr. Battle was named the Professional Educators of Tennessee’s 2022 Superintendent of the Year and was featured in the Nashville Post's Most Powerful Women, and in 2021 she was named the Tennessee Principals Association’s Supervisor of the Year and received the Nashville NAACP’s Legacy Award. In 2015 she received the William J. and Lucille H. Field Award in Support of Excellence in Tennessee Secondary Leadership from the University of Tennessee-Knoxville as a result of leading Antioch High School to become the first zoned high school ever to be named a Tennessee Reward School, the top distinction a school can earn in Tennessee.

The April lessons are collectively titled, “The Measure of Faith,” and the four lessons are drawn from the books of Luke and Matthew. In these biblical passages, we encounter various instances where individuals demonstrate compassion, faith, and kindness toward others. Be sure to follow along in study in any of our best-selling titles!

In the first lesson, we learn about “Helping a Friend in Need.” We witness the powerful act of friendship and faith as friends bring a paralyzed man to Jesus, demonstrating their unwavering belief in his ability to heal. The second lesson, we learn about “Faith of a Centurion.” This showcases the humility and profound faith of a Roman centurion, who displays remarkable trust in Jesus’ authority to heal his servant from a distance. Lesson three, the title is “How Much Do You Love Me?” This highlights the transformative power of forgiveness and love as a sinful woman expresses her love for Jesus through anointing His feet with costly oil, and Jesus extends forgiveness and salvation to her. In lesson four, we learn about “Help for an Outsider.” We witness Jesus’ compassion transcending cultural boundaries as He heals the daughter of a Canaanite woman, emphasizing the inclusivity of God’s love and grace. These narratives teach us valuable lessons about the importance of faith, compassion, and inclusion in our relationships with others, encouraging us to emulate Jesus’ example of love and kindness toward all.

Today we celebrate the triumph of life over death and the boundless love and grace that God has bestowed upon us through His Son.

As we reflect on the significance of this day, let us remember the profound impact of Christ’s resurrection on our lives. Through the resurrection, Jesus conquered sin and death, offering us the ultimate gift of salvation. His victory over death is our reminder that no matter how dark our circumstances may seem, there is always hope in the promise of new life and redemption.

Matthew 28:6 (NIV) "He is not here; he has risen, just as he said."

May your celebrations be filled with gratitude as we gather to honor the risen King. Wishing you many Easter blessings!

03/29/2024

On this sacred Good Friday, we gather to contemplate the profound significance of Christ’s death. His sacrifice on the cross serves as a testament to the boundless love of our Savior. Through His suffering and ultimate sacrifice, we are granted the promise of everlasting life.

In the shadow of the cross, we find solace in the knowledge that we are forgiven. No sin is beyond the reach of God’s mercy. Through Christ’s atoning death, we are offered redemption and reconciliation with our Creator.

1 Peter 2:24 (NRSV) “He himself bore our sins in his body on the cross, so that, having died to sins, we might live for righteousness; by his wounds you have been healed.”

Today, let us meditate on the incredible gift of forgiveness bestowed upon us through the sacrifice of Jesus. As we reflect on His death, may we embrace the hope of resurrection and the assurance of eternal salvation.
