Two charged in Dollar General shooting
On Saturday, Dec. 13, Brown County law enforcement responded to a reported shooting at the Dollar General Store in Bean Blossom at approximately 2:50 p.m. and found two individuals shot. Kayden Barnard, of Anderson, was shot in his stomach and Corbyn Harris, 19, of Martinsville, was shot in his legs and stomach. A third person was found on scene with a handgun in his possession, Liam Barnard, the brother of Kayden Barnard, also from Anderson. He was transported to the hospital for hypothermia.
Kayden told law enforcement that he met a “Dayvon Bennitt” through a Facebook Group for selling guns. Kayden stated that he arranged to travel from Anderson to the Dollar General parking lot in Bean Blossom with his brother to sell “Dayvon Bennitt” a handgun. He told officers that when he arrived, he met two men, later identified as Trey Boyd, 20, of Morgantown, and a juvenile and showed them the unloaded Smith and Wesson Shield 9mm handgun.
One of the men allegedly asked if they accepted Cash App and Kayden stated that he would not. At this point, the male started running off with the gun, according to the report. Kayden followed the male around the back of the Dollar General, but as he passed the back of the building, a third male, later identified as Harris, was already behind it, pointing a gun at him. Harris allegedly shot Kayden immediately. Kayden exchanged gunfire with Harris from the ground after he was shot.
Boyd and the juvenile fled the scene. According to the report, Boyd went to Bill Monroe’s Music Park, where he cut through towards Bean Blossom Trailer Court. Sheriff Brad Stogsdill and Sheriff’s Deputy Nick Trevino found foot tracks in the snow leading to Boyd’s residence.
Chief Deputy Paul Henderson made contact with Boyd, who told law enforcement that he had been home all day. However, a report from an anonymous passerby placed Boyd and the juvenile walking towards the Dollar General prior to the shooting.
In a security video from Brown County Water, three individuals can be seen walking towards the Dollar General prior to the shooting. The video shows one individual going behind the store while the others go to the front. A portion of the shooting is also on video, showing one individual falling down. The video corroborates Kayden’s account of what happened.
Through previous incidents involving Brown County law enforcement, including instances with fi****ms, it is known that the juvenile, Boyd and Harris associate with one another, according to the affidavit.
When searching the “Dayvon Bennitt” name on Facebook, officers found that the URL for this account belonged to Boyd and was originally set up under Boyd’s name, but has since been changed to the alias.
Boyd was detained and transported to the Brown County Sheriff’s Department, where he admitted that he arranged for the purchase of the firearm with Kayden. According to the affidavit, he also admitted that he went to the Dollar General, along with Harris and the juvenile, to get the gun. Boyd stated that the juvenile did not know what was going to happen. He also admitted to walking off with the gun, running behind the Dollar General and fleeing first to Bill Monroe’s Music Park and then to his trailer.
Boyd admitted that he hid the gun in his trailer and told his mother, Jodi Boyd, where it was located.
Law enforcement later found messages on Boyd’s phone showing that he was planning the robbery.
Kayden and Harris were transported to Johnson Memorial Hospital and then to IU Methodist Hospital, where they both required serious medical attention.
As a result of the incident, Harris and Boyd have been charged with level 2 felony robbery resulting in serious bodily injury. Harris has also been charged with a level 3 felony aggravated battery and a level 5 felony battery by means of a deadly weapon.
Mugshot is of Trey Boyd. Harris has yet to be booked.
