Do you know what a 1099 is? Let me inform you!

A 1099 form is a tax document used to report income that is not earned through traditional employment. This can include income earned as an independent contractor, freelancer, or a athlete. The form is used by the payer, typically a business or person who paid the individual/athlete, to report the amount of money paid during the tax year to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and the individual. The 1099 form comes in various types, such as 1099-MISC, 1099-INT, and 1099-DIV, depending on the type of income being reported. If you receive a 1099 form, it is essential to report the income accurately on your tax return to avoid penalties or fines from the IRS.

Tuesday Talking about and

Here are 4 taxable opportunities that need to be accounted for once tax season approaches in April from the previous year (Jan-Dec).

1) Endorsement deals: Athletes can earn money by endorsing products and services, such as sports gear, energy drinks, and luxury items. These earnings are generally taxable.

2) Appearance fees: Athletes may receive appearance fees for attending events or making public appearances. These fees are taxable as income.

3) Social media sponsorships: With the rise of social media, athletes can earn money by promoting products or services on their social media channels. These earnings are generally taxable.

4) Merchandise sales: Athletes can earn money by selling merchandise with their name or image on it, such as clothing, hats, and autographed items. These earnings are taxable as income.

Let's go Monday! Let's get into and the correlation of today.

One of the most significant issues with taxes and is determining the value of athletes deals. The value of a deal can vary significantly depending on the athlete's popularity, the brand they are endorsing, and the type of product being advertised.

Different states have different tax rates and regulations, making it difficult for athletes to navigate the tax landscape. The common issue is determining which state has the right to tax an athlete's earnings. Athletes may earn money from endorsement deals in multiple states, which can make it difficult to determine which state has the right to tax those earnings. Some states have attempted to address this issue by enacting legislation that provides clarity on how these earnings should be taxed.

The tax implications of athletes monetizing their is still a gray area. While some states have enacted laws allowing college athletes to earn money from their , there is still uncertainty around how these earnings will be taxed and how it will impact their eligibility for scholarships and other benefits. Overall, taxes and NIL are a complex and evolving landscape, and athletes and tax authorities alike will need to adapt to keep up with the changing regulations and policies.

Earlier this week I talked about do's and don'ts within high school sports. Today I wanted to give you my top five tips to live by for the college and high school student athlete.

1) Know the rules: NIL rules vary by state and by athletic conference, so it's important to understand what is allowed and what isn't. Make sure to consult with your school's compliance office or an attorney to ensure you're following the appropriate guidelines.

2) Build your personal brand: To capitalize on NIL opportunities, you'll need to develop a strong personal brand that resonates with fans and potential partners. Consider using social media and other platforms to build your following and showcase your personality and interests.

3) Be strategic about partnerships: When considering potential partnerships, think about brands that align with your values and interests, and that will help you build your personal brand. Be sure to negotiate fair compensation and consider seeking advice from an attorney or agent.

4) Stay focused on academics and athletics: While NIL opportunities can be lucrative, it's important to prioritize your academic and athletic commitments. Make sure you're fulfilling your responsibilities to your team and your school, and that you're keeping up with your coursework.

5) Keep accurate records: When engaging in NIL activities, it's important to keep accurate records of any agreements or payments you receive. This will help you stay organized and ensure you're in compliance with any reporting requirements.

(We are going to jump into taxes next week!)

On yesterday I dropped the first 6 of 12 FAQ's straight from the website in regard to in high school sports. Today we are dropping the last 6 to better equip and educate the youth including their family.

7. Are there limits as to how much an athlete can charge for giving lessons or putting on a camp?

No.

8. Can a coach of a school assist an athlete who is giving lessons or putting on a camp?

No. A coach’s assistance would reasonably suggest support or endorsement by the school.

9. Are there restrictions as to the types of businesses athletes can sign NIL agreements with?

Not at this time.

10. Would it be a violation if an athlete and his/her family were offered a residence as a result of an NIL agreement after he/she had enrolled in and attended a school?

This would be a recruiting violation if a school was involved.

11. Does a school have to document its athletes’ NIL activities?

Not for the purposes of TSSAA. However, school officials may wish to maintain an awareness of those activities in order to ensure that the activities do not suggest the endorsement or sponsorship of the school.

12. If a coach is contacted by a community member seeking a pitcher/receiver/setter/etc. to provide lessons to their child, could the coach direct them to one of his/her players?

No. A coach directing someone to one of his/her players for this purpose would reasonably suggest endorsement or sponsorship of the school.

What a great weekend for rest and relaxation. Back to the work week ahead.

education for my High School athletes, coaches, administration, and family. Here are 6 of 12 FAQ from the website on Name Image and Likeness.

(7-12 will be tomorrow/Tuesday, so be on the lookout so you know the rules)

1. Can an athlete post a link to a business they are receiving payment for sponsoring if there are references to the school in their social media profile where the link appears?

No. References to the school or pictures depicting the athlete in their uniform may not appear in the post containing a link to the sponsoring business.

2. Can a coach or other school official facilitate, coordinate, promote, or negotiate an NIL agreement for a student-athlete enrolled at his/her school?

No. A school can provide generic educational materials or advice regarding the factors that should be considered before entering into an NIL deal but should never be involved with coordinating, facilitating, promoting, or negotiating agreements for student-athletes.

3. Can a booster club or other school support organization make payment to a student-athlete for the use of his or her name, image, or likeness?

No. Payment from a school booster club could reasonably suggest the endorsement or sponsorship of the TSSAA school.

4. Can a school or school support organization distribute money for services to a student through a Name, Image Likeness Collective?

No. School association with a collective would be considered express or implied sponsorship or endorsement of the activity.

5. If an athlete wishes to give private lessons or run a mini camp using school facilities and advertises the lesson or camp, is he/she in violation of the Amateur Rule by mentioning the school as the host site in the advertisement?

Yes. Students may receive payment for activities not related to performance provided that they are carried out in a manner that does not suggest the endorsement or sponsorship of a TSSAA school. To avoid the inference or suggestion that the school endorses or sponsors the activity, the school should not be mentioned in the advertisement. The student may, of course, inform those who contact him or her about the location of the lessons or camp, but that location – if it is a member school – should not be mentioned in any advertisement. If a student is using a school’s facility for instructional purposes, he or she should be treated the same as any member of the student population regarding usage agreements, fees, etc.

6. Are there limits as to how much an athlete can make from an endorsement or sponsorship?

No.

Friday is here, cheers to the weekend!

The is in full swing today with on-field workouts getting started on yesterday with the D-Linemen and Linebackers. I'll be glued to the TV today and throughout the weekend watching this years prospects. As a fan, I'm looking for offensive linemen. Our new GM Ran Carthon and HC Mike Vrabel have their work cut out for them. We literally will be looking for 4 new starters, maybe 5 depending on cap casualties or retirement.

In my opinion, the O-Line is the most important position we need to be looking at this draft. What's yours?

03/02/2023

Let's go Thursday! Be great today!

The started on Monday, with on-field player workouts to begin today at . Measured drills will include the 40-yard dash, Bench press, Vertical jump, Broad jump, Three-cone drill, 20-yard shuttle, 60-yard shuttle for the Defensive linemen and Linebackers.

Here are just a few prospects that utilized their while in college as they prepare for the upcoming draft according to actionnetwork.com:

Alabama Crimson Tide quarterback Bryce Young is the highest NIL earner this year. Young has a total valuation of $3.2 million in NIL deals. Bryce Young saw his value rise in 2022 after winning the coveted Heisman Trophy the previous season.

CJ Stroud came off a strong 2021-22 season, leading the Ohio State Buckeyes to a Rose Bowl title. Stroud also broke the OSU record for most passing yards in a single game. This has propelled him to a $2.5 million NIL valuation.

Smith-Njigba propelled himself into the spotlight after winning Offensive MVP in the 2022 Rose Bowl. Smith-Njigba’s electric play on the field has earned him a variety of NIL deals reportedly worth $1.7 million.

Bijan Robinson is one of the most highly touted running backs heading into the season. Robinson rushed for over 1,000 yards and 11 touchdowns last season as a sophomore. The hype around Robinson in 2022-23 has earned him a NIL valuation of $1.7 million.

This 2023 rookie incoming class is going to be special, many of them coming in with already harvesting their fortunes prior to playing a down in the .

Can you believe it, it's March already! Q1 will be over in 31 days! Then it will be time to set goals for Q2. Also, Happy

This morning I wanted to give an example on an athlete and how his deal impacted him and his family for the good!

This particular example of an athlete whose life has been impacted positively by deals is quarterback (D'Eriq King). Shortly after the NCAA's new NIL rules went into effect in July 2021, King announced several endorsement deals, including one with a Florida-based moving company and another with College Hunks Hauling Junk and Moving. These deals were reported to be worth a total of $20,000.

For King, these deals provided much-needed financial support for him and his family. He grew up in a low-income household and has been supporting his mother financially since he was a teenager. In an interview with ESPN, King discussed how the endorsement deals have enabled him to provide for his family in ways that he previously could not:

"It's great to be able to provide for my family and my mom, and take care of them," King said. "I don't have to worry about my mom paying the light bill this month or paying the mortgage. That's a blessing for me."

King's success with NIL deals has also inspired other college athletes to explore their own marketing and endorsement opportunities. As he continues to earn money from these deals, King has become a spokesperson for the potential benefits of NIL and the opportunities it provides for student-athletes.

Overall, King's story illustrates how NIL deals can have a significant impact on an athlete's life and their family, providing financial support and opening up new opportunities for athletes who may have previously struggled to make ends meet. With the new NIL rules in place, more athletes like King may have the opportunity to achieve financial stability and support their families while pursuing their athletic careers.

This is just one example of many that are happening in this current NIL space we are just now getting to know.

In fact to become an official policy, a two-thirds vote will be required at the next Virginia High School League meeting. If the vote passes this threshold, the NIL policy would become effective on July 1!

As of this post, 25 states and the District of Columbia have passed legislation to allow NIL for high school athletes.

Could you imagine how much money , , or (all from Virginia) would have capitalized of their name image likeness!?

It's Friday! Cheers to the weeknd.

Earlier this week I posted about Georgia and the potential of the state allowing opportunities for high school athletes. Well, once the state passes the law (I believe they will), one of the first athletes to cash in will be . Juju is only a freshman right now with offers from , , among his 35 scholarship offers.
His father Lewis estimates once Georgia legalizes that his son could potentially make $500k on the low end and $1.5M on the high end. He (Lewis) pointed out that they recently turned down a $60k opportunity!

It's coming, the sports investment funds in 2023 have already accomplished well over $400M. The fun is just starting!

Have a wonderful weekend and see you on Monday morning!

The importance of NIL deals for college/high school athletes and how they can help them build their brand and secure their financial future.

NIL deals allow athletes to profit from their own name, image, and likeness, which was previously prohibited by NCAA rules until June 30, 2021. These deals are important for college athletes for several reasons, including:

1) Building their brand: NIL deals give athletes the opportunity to develop their personal brand, which can help them stand out from their peers and create a strong foundation for their future careers. By leveraging their name, image, and likeness, athletes can establish themselves as influencers and thought leaders in their sport and in their communities.

2) Generating income: NIL deals can provide athletes with a new source of income, which can be especially valuable for those who come from low-income backgrounds or who are not on full athletic scholarships. With the ability to earn money from sponsorships, endorsements, and other partnerships, athletes can better support themselves financially and potentially even help their families.

3) Preparing for the future: NIL deals can help athletes gain valuable business and marketing experience, as they learn how to negotiate contracts, manage their own personal brand, and build relationships with sponsors and partners. These skills can be useful in a wide range of careers, both in and outside of sports.

4) Promoting social causes: NIL deals can also give athletes a platform to promote social causes that are important to them, such as social justice, environmentalism, or mental health. By partnering with sponsors who share their values, athletes can use their platform to effect positive change in the world.

In summary, NIL deals are an important development for athletes, as they provide new opportunities to build their personal brand, generate income, develop valuable skills, and promote social causes. By taking advantage of these opportunities, athletes can set themselves up for success both on and off the field. That's a win win for everyone!
