Vance and Mitch have been working together since the turn of the century, when they collaborated on the Grammy winning record, “The 11th Hour” by Jars of Clay in 2000. Though the physical location of Sputnik Sound has changed once in 2004, Vance and Mitch’s relationship has stayed intact as well as their collaboration efforts. Vance, with his engineering/technical expertise, and Mitch with his pro
ducer/artist background, together make a great team. They both have impressive discographies working independently and together. Sputnik Sound actually was birthed in Mitch’s desire to move his studio out of his house to a separate location. Through conversations with Stephen Mason (Jars of Clay), they decided to renovate Stephen’s basement into the space odyssey now known as Sputnik Sound. Vance and Mitch (and Stephen) recorded several projects there with fond memories. But, families grew bigger, and Stephen needed to move, which caused Sputnik Sound to launch into orbit again. With the help of Jacquire King (Modest Mouse, Kings of Leon, Tom Waits) Sputnik Sound had a smooth landing in Berry Hill, which is within the city Nashville, TN. Berry Hill has been dubbed the new Music Row with over 20 studios in a 3 mile square area. Sputnik is now equipped with a bountiful assortment of some of the best vintage, professional, and hand built gear ever made, including Neve console API, Universal Audio, A Design, Studer, Neumman, Royer, Coles, Korby, AEA, Emperical Labs, Urei, Gates, and tons of instruments and odd toys. Sputnik has everything Mitch and Vance need to bring out the best of an artist on any level.
