• Universal Music Group and TikTok hit a sour note in negotiations, failing to strike a new deal amidst disputes over artist compensation and AI usage.

• From UMG’s Open Letter:
“With respect to the issue of artist and songwriter compensation, TikTok proposed paying our artists and songwriters at a rate that is a fraction of the rate that similarly situated major social platforms pay. Today, as an indication of how little TikTok compensates artists and songwriters, despite its massive and growing user base, rapidly rising advertising revenue and increasing reliance on music-based content, TikTok accounts for only about 1% of our total revenue.
Ultimately TikTok is trying to build a music-based business, without paying fair value for the music.”

No one is arguing that TikTok is an amazing platform to give visibility and awareness to up-and-coming artists as well as previously unknown established artists. The promotion is invaluable.
However, unless you know how to parlay that newfound popularity into monetized opportunities, then millions of artists are simply “famous and broke”.
TikTok also does very little to thwart Al generated content.
In fact, it indirectly encourages and supports it.
This is a lose-lose scenario on both sides of the coin.
At the end of the day, it comes down to the copyright owner and the value that they put on their property. That decision is extremely subjective so everyone is not going to see eye to eye on this.
