Our website has a new look thanks to and we have some fresh new articles to go with it! Gregory Bruno recently sat down with Louisiana born artist Cullen Washington Jr to learn about his practice, and discovered some beautiful connections between the work and the philosophical trends we’re seeing in the art world. The link to take a look is in our bio 💫

Joe Nolan and Justin Wood
Southern Digital

It’s all spontaneous. I’d do a recon drive during the day and when I’m there, I’m just kind of improvising, moving things around, trying different visuals and just kind of seeing what happened, especially early on. It’s the most fun I’ve ever had in my life. I was crawling around in the dirt and being on cliff sides and all this stuff and creating these monumental installations for myself to capture photographs. That in-person experience, for me, that’s the piece. I saw it as kind of connection to the earthwork artists: using the land to create something that is much bigger than anything you could do in a museum or gallery, and experience that for myself.

Mikewindy and Yanira Vissepó

I don’t paint. It’s not something that I’ve been taught. How can I make sure that what my square is, is full of color and then I can add on and make a textile painting or a collage painting. Because it’s a new body of work. I wanted to keep it really fresh in a way that I’m definitely still influenced by everything I’ve learned, but I didn’t want to stick to work that I’ve done before.

Interview with Hannah Einhorn:
Homemaking and the Creation of Nest

I like the symbolism of what a nest can evoke. I view my home as having many purposes, for example I view it as my safe space, much like everybody else. I view it as a place I can bring friends to and develop a community. In contrast, I also view it as a fort, a place of fortitude, solitude, and safety. That really embodies what a nest can be. A nest is a place that life can grow within, where you are protected from the outside.
-Hannah Einhorn

Hannah Einhhorn’s exhibition, Nest, opened March 30th at the State Gallery in Nashville, Tennessee.

Louisiana Perceptions
– Art/ Culture/ Environment

From abstract renderings to realistic interpretations, Louisiana Perceptions offers a compelling narrative that reflects the various influences that have shaped the state’s cuisine, arts, culture, and heritage, presenting a visual feast and creative sampling of regional artists. Louisiana’s broad spectrum of heritage and history and the interpretation of that subject using art is a vast arena of styles and viewpoints that can also be a podium for awareness and change.

Interview with Wayne Brezinka

So, as an artist I not only have the power to create my art, but I can use that power to help other people, open mental doors for them, turn the light on in their eyes, and make sure that they’re still here. It’s so rewarding to be able to help another person and tell them, “Look, there’s a reason to stick around! And there’s a way through. Let’s go over here and discover something hopeful through making art.”

Storytelling and Multiverse
-Interview with Roger Allen Cleaves for A World Apart at Sheet Cake Gallery

The protective veil that shields children from the realities of life was shattered when I read novels like Animal Farm, Invisible Man, and Fahrenheit 451. The battles fought between opposing forces hold a magnetic allure and the intensity is the strongest when beauty meets the grotesque. This period of my life was also the golden age of comics, cartoons, and video games, which equally had an effect on my artistic development. In my eyes as a child I thought the highest form of art were the Sunday newspaper comics. They had the ability to tell a story and they used, at times, deceptively innocent characters that were proxies for real life counterparts. When it comes to fiction I gravitate towards stories that are imperfect, awkward, and gritty because that represents to me what it means to be alive in contemporary times.
-Roger Allen Cleaves

A World Apart will have its opening at Sheet Cake on Saturday, March 9. The work will be on display from March 9 through April 27, 2024, 405 Monroe Ave. Memphis, TN.

On the MSA Select 2024 Exhibition
– Styx Farris for the Young Art Writers Project

This collection is full of beautiful and well-made works of art that are unique, whimsical, and pleasing to the eye, but it is awkward in its layout. Some of the pieces featured are more well-suited to exhibition than others, but this collection is altogether relatively well-curated and will delight and intrigue viewers, inspiring them to learn more about the various social and emotional challenges that the art conveys.

Never Odd or Even at Red Arrow Gallery
– Review and Interview with Nashville Artist Emily Weiner

The paintings are glorious, minimalist landscapes, painted often in rich hues of ultramarine and cobalt blue. The curtains are being pulled away, and we are begged to look beyond. Faces in profile become boundless mountain ranges. A spiral oscillates between micro and macro worlds. Landscapes reflect and mirror themselves. A sun becomes a moon, becomes a void, becomes a portal. The work is thoughtful and expansive. As an installation, the paintings made me acutely aware of my role as a viewer, but also of how I perceive the world.

Mnemonic Murals of Blackness
Purvis Young Redux at the Tampa Museum of Art

In Young's works, faceless, nameless, legion figures stand to contest the racial violence perpetrated by corrupt law enforcement in 1980s Miami-almost in group silhouettes of isolation, save the images of riders on horseback with them. Each lean and/or curved body extends in Mannerist exaggeration, but the pregnant female body protrudes an abnormal bubble of irrational exuberance.

Purvis Young Redux is currently on view at the Tampa Museum of Art through 2025

The Business of Art
Professional Marketer Edwin Acevedo Offers a Basic Primer on Marketing

And it’s worth pointing out that storytelling doesn’t just come from what’s on your artist bio. It’s about the things associated with your art. In terms of art marketing, people are buying more than a piece of art. They’re buying something that’s associated with values that they like. It’s no different than, say, someone who likes a punk rock band because they like the social values of that genre.
