I’m extremely excited to announce the launch of Goat Song Records, a new stand-up comedy label headquartered in Nashville. As a boutique, exclusive label, its focus will be on quality over quantity– working with established and emerging comics through catalog management, “from-video” audio projects, and original recordings.

Goat Song Records celebrates the craft of comedy, the art of joke writing, and the magic of performance. Stand-up comedy is an assembly of wit, exaggerations and skillful lies– an ethical gray area of creative insincerity designed to lead you into surprise and delight. It plays with your beliefs, manipulates your assumptions, and tests your tolerance. It is not a safe space.

The label will actively promote intelligent, unique, and transgressive material designed for discriminating comedy fans, with a contemporary social media strategy and a focus on building a like-minded community of fans. Our world will be an oasis of exceptionally smart and well-honed stand-up as a respite from car-seat TikTokers and one-trick crowd-work ponies.

Working with comics such as Patton Oswalt, Emo Philips, Margaret Cho, Dana Gould, Jena Friedman, Robert Hawkins, and Arj Barker will establish Goat Song as a premier label with its soul rooted in the tradition of comedy masters.

To keep current on our upcoming releases, recordings, and curated label-agnostic playlists, I kindly ask you to follow our new, yet-to-be-populated socials. The YouTube channel will also showcase videos from around the comedy world- stand-up, sketches, anything funny. The Spotify channel will feature label-agnostic playlists from the best comedy albums presented in themes- S*x, Politics, Religion, Dark Humor, etc. The first one is a collection of comedians on the subject of music and bands. There is a private playlist available to subscribers of our mailing list that features only the newest and best tracks from contemporary comics- nothing released more than two years ago. Sign up for the mailing list on our website.

Your ground-floor support is important and appreciated. Links to the socials in comments.

Why “Goat Song Records”?

Before YouTube or Netflix, before CDs or vinyl, before comedy clubs, spotlights, or even theater itself…there were goat songs.

In ancient Greece, people would adorn themselves in goat skins to mimic satyrs, and devote their impudent, often raunchy monologues to the revelrous wine god Dionysus at festivals in his honor. Competitions were held for the best and funniest, birthing the dramatic arts in the Western world– and our foremost comedians today honor this audacious legacy.

Psyched to be shooting author and rock legend Pamela Des Barres tomorrow at The Eighth Room in Nashville. Her first memoir "I'm With the Band" is a tell-all classic of an unashamed and thrill-filled life. Come see a true Dionysian libertine in the flesh.

Who among my comedy friends will be at Moontower this weekend?

Everyone in America has an opinion on what’s wrong with California. I’m thinking the main thing is a lack of cover bands in bars playing Johnny Cash songs.

My honest and very hopeful prediction: a semi-truck full of money will be offered to David Byrne for the Talking Heads to reunite for a residency at The Sphere in Vegas and he won’t be able to resist, not for just the money, but for that amazing venue and the possibilities for art.

The band looked to be getting along on the press tour for the Stop Making Sense re-release, and the movie reminded anyone who needed to be, and was revealed to those unfamiliar, that they were one of the greatest, most creative, and ever-changing bands of all time.

Much respect for this one. A trailblazing comic, yo-yo champion, savage pillow fighter, and fellow Kenwoodian. He lived just over the hill from me in the Valley of the Moon, and graciously allowed me into his home for a lengthy portrait session when I was doing my MFA. Pour out a bit of Cab Sauv for a legend.
