On behalf of the Prine family, we were deeply saddened to hear of the passing of John’s dear friend, Kris Kristofferson. Their friendship was made of magic, and Kris was the long time North Star for John. He was a beacon of light, a fierce talent and a gentle soul. Our hearts are with Lisa and his family…

Kris was an important character in John’s story. They first met when Steve Goodman convinced Kris to go hear John play in Chicago: “The chairs were on the tables, the waitresses were counting their tips, and I was waiting for my paycheck. And Kris came in with two other people. We got four chairs down and I got on the stage right in front of him and sang about seven songs. And then he bought me a beer and asked if I could get back up there and sing those seven again and anything else I wrote.” Kris then invited John to join him at his NYC show which led to John getting offered a record deal from Atlantic the next morning. The friendship between the two not only impacted John but every country artist after Kris and beyond.

He was always happy to connect with those who admired him; we appreciate the time he took to speak with Fiona Prine’s mother Mary (super fan). Though he was a giant, he was incredibly warm and human. He will be missed.

“Kris did more for me than anyone, without looking for anything for himself. I always make a point of telling musicians, and other singer-songwriters, that at no time did Kris ever introduce me to his music publisher or record label. He introduced me to people who were good people, and let it fly from there. After being in the music business for 45 years, I can see how rare that is.” -JP

Thanks WMOT Roots Radio 89.5 FM!

"At the same time as the book, Oh Boy Records released a multi-artist album - also called My Black Country - featuring a dozen of the most influential and exciting Black women in Americana/country performing Randall’s favorite songs. Rhiannon Giddens is here singing “The Ballad of Sally Ann,” a devastating song - written with Harry Stinson and Mark O’Connor in the early 90s - about the wedding of the titular character to Johnny (“in his one good suit”) followed by Johnny’s lynching. It was first cut on O’Connor’s New Nashville Cats album of 1991. That sprightly arrangement sung by John Cowan doesn’t feel right now, but Giddens’s somber reading against her open back banjo brings the proper pathos."

The conversation about Black influence on and presence in country music has been intense and restorative over the past decade, and nobody has a more authoritative or informed take on the subject than writer and scholar Alice Randall. She became the first Black woman to launch a career as a professio...

Introducing an undeniable, multi-faceted trio of talent, Oh Boy Records is proud to announce the signing of Virginia-based band Palmyra to our roster of recording artists. Palmyra, named one of NPR’s “Best New Artists of 2024,” is a unique blend of traditional folk string instruments, lush harmony, and earnest songwriting. Their sound, often described as a distant cousin to The Avett Brothers and the Wood Brothers, nods toward Appalachian and Midwestern Americana, with intricate arrangements that create the illusion of a full, larger-than-three ensemble. Jody Whelan and Fiona Whelan Prine joined the band on stage during their set at the legendary Newport Folk Festival to announce the band's addition. Oh Boy is set to release the band’s 2023 6-song EP, Belladonna, on vinyl, with new music slated for release in 2025.

“We’re so excited to welcome Palmyra to Oh Boy! The energy and vitality of their performances grab you right away, but what really stays with you is the depth of their songwriting - songs that tackle the struggle to make sense of yourself and the world around you,” says Jody Whelan, Managing Partner, Oh Boy Records. “I think they’ve been able to resonate with audiences so deeply because of the honesty and vulnerability in their songs. This is music that is much needed in the world.”

“To say we’re proud to be signed to Oh Boy would be an understatement. It’s the honor of a lifetime to be brought into the Prime family fold through a label and legacy that we consider to be a North Star for acknowledging the power and importance of great art,” says Palmyra’s Sasha Landon.
