HEADS UP GEEZERS!!!

If you were born before Jan 2, 1959, you can use 1040-SR to file your 2023 taxes. The main benefit in doing so is an INCREASED STANDARD DEDUCTION! All other features of the return appear to be the same as for the regular 1040, and any necessary schedules can be used as well.

Since Karen and I are both eligible by birthdate and file jointly, our standard deduction is $30,700 instead of $27,700.

It’s kind of funny how some people who request information about life insurance act as if I have a Star Trek type tractor beam that will capture them if they ever answer the phone. I’m not about to force anyone into anything….as if that were even possible 🤓

WARNING: BANKING SCAM!!!

I’m embarrassed to report that I just fell for a sophisticated phone scam that ended up giving access to the scammer to my online account where they could change the password, log in, and initiate a wire transfer and potentially access transaction records, etc.

Fortunately I had a moment of clarity when the call disconnected after the caller said they’d be right back to arrange a replacement debit card. By immediately calling my bank I was able to totally lock online access my account and MAYBE got there fast enough that the wire transfer hadn’t yet processed. That’s still to be determined.

This began with a call that spoofed my bank’s 800 number and thus came up as my bank in my phone’s caller ID. As my bank has told me, never answer a phone call directly from them. If it’s really them they will leave a voicemail, then you should initiate the call to the bank.
