This week we share with you our all original RCA BA6A. Introduced in 1951, the BA6A, like many compressors of the time, were intended for broadcasting studios. Similarly to the Fairchild 660/670, many of these tube based units were thrown away (yes, trashed) due to the transition into the transistor craze of the 1960’s. Sporting the sought after 6386 tubes, this vari-mu compressors copious amount of gain and slow release can handle any source, from vocals, bass, and kick, to Jimmy Pages favorite source application, acoustic guitar. The BA6A is the perfect answer for adding glue and thickness when depth is lacking in a rather flat digital landscape.
Don’t let looks deceive you! While it may look like a power plant remote from the Cold War, this is one of, if not the most special piece of gear in our rack. When our head Engineer, Justin Cortelyou, was in the process of putting together a list of all the gear any engineer and producer could ask for, he wanted to honor his mentor, legendary mix engineer Mike Shipley, and get hold of the compressor behind all those hit vocal mixes we all know and love. While plugins attempt to achieve what is so special about this piece, there is nothing like the real thing.

You know it’s going to be a great session when your studio’s workhorse amp is a 1964 Pre CBS Fender Deluxe Reverb. This gem is the “holy grail” of amps for many players and enthusiasts alike.

1964 was the sophomore year of this magical 22-Watt piece of Fender engineering.

Boasting an extra gain stage, players are able to achieve a classic breakup at lower volumes, while also attaining the amps signature cleans that many amps try to emulate. In addition, the Reverb and Tremelo Circuit are as smooth as a butter.
