NOLENSVILLE — When Brenden Anes made his most recent visit to Knoxville three weeks ago, he didn't just go for a game.

Before Tennessee football beat Florida in overtime with Anes in attendance, the Page 3-star linebacker watched practice and sat in on the Volunteers' linebacker meeting. Anes had committed to Wisconsin nine months earlier, but Tennessee wasn't letting up its pursuit.

That pursuit paid off Thursday when Anes, the No. 20 senior in Tennessee per the 247Sports Composite, switched his committment to the Vols and coach Josh Heupel. The behind-the-scenes look at their gameday preparations was just one reason why.

"They're locked in," Anes said. "The culture in that room, they're on point. One of the most dominant defenses in the nation."

Anes knows a thing or two about dominant defense. He had a pair of tackles for loss as Page routed Nolensville, 42-0, on Friday to clinch its second straight Region 6-5A championship and wrap up an undefeated regular season. The Patriots (10-0) host Columbia Central (6-4) next Friday in the first round of the TSSAA playoffs.

Auburn football commitment Donovan Starr had a 55-yard touchdown reception and an interception as Ravenwood finished the TSSAA football regular season unbeaten with a 21-3 win over rival Brentwood in the Battle of the Woods on Friday at Ravenwood.

The top-ranked Raptors (10-0, 5-0 6-6A) earned the No. 1 seed from Region 6-6A and will open the Class 6A playoffs next week at home against Cane Ridge. Seventh-ranked Brentwood (8-2, 4-0), the No. 2 seed, will be at home against Smyrna in the first round.

The Tennessee high school football regular season is over and the TSSAA playoff brackets have been released for the 2024 postseason.

Playoff games begin Friday across the state. Tickets will be available online through the GoFan app for $8 each, or $10 at the gate through the state semifinals.

The BlueCross Bowls will be held Dec. 5-7. All three Division II championship games will be held Dec. 5. Class 1A, 3A and 5A will be held on Dec. 6 and Class 2A, 4A and 6A are on Dec. 7. All games will be played in Chattanooga at Finley Stadium.

Thanks to injuries, it's been a revolving door as to who has led the Oakland football backfield this season.

But the Patriots keep finding the weapons to keep the offense flowing.

Three-star 2026 athlete Craig Tutt was a prime example during Thursday's 36-21 win over rival Riverdale in the Battle of the 'Boro. He had touchdown runs of 65 and 72. The former gave Riverdale a 22-21 lead with 6:39 left in regulation. The 72-yarder sealed the win.

"We've got a lot of people that's able to step up when needed," said Tutt, an SEC defensive back recruit. He finished with 211 yards rushing. "That's just having those weapons at our disposal."

LEWISBURG — Jamahl Gentry’s cleats squished further into the mud as he sprinted into the open and screamed into the wet sky.

The Marshall County senior receiver had to keep the raucous celebration going.

No one minded the rain, and the Tigers’ traditional singing of the school alma mater rang out a little louder Thursday following their emotional 24-21 overtime win against TSSAA football rival Pearl-Cohn in the Region 5-4A championship.

“I had to let it all out after that one,” Gentry said. “You just want to scream, man.”

A 10-year-old boy reached into the glove compartment of his father's old Ford, which was parked outside his Nashville home on Vaulx Lane, and picked up a loaded, .22-caliber pistol.

Michael Vaughn did what his father, Clarence Vaughn, told him to do.

Game 3 of the 1972 World Series between the Cincinnati Reds and Oakland Athletics was about to unfold on the living room TV. Michael Vaughn sat on the floor, his arm resting on his dad's leg. He was waiting for his favorite player, Oakland's Reggie Jackson, to be introduced.

Vaughn had no idea that his mother, Mary, had asked his father to move out.

"They had gotten to the Reds manager, Sparky Anderson, and I heard, 'POW!' " said Vaughn, an assistant football coach at Brentwood Academy.

Vaughn flinched when he said that last word.
