Hello, I am Marilyn Dale! 👋Thank you for taking a moment to get to know me. Somewhere along the line I read, “whatever you loved to do in kindergarten is what yo

u’ll love to do all your life.” For me, it’s true, and I am both so lucky and blessed. I loved drawing and coloring. My favorite toys were my crayons.Today, as a fine artist, I am an award winning artist, a colorist, accomplished in oil, watercolor and pastel. I am inspired by landscapes and people, creating everything from traditional portraiture through abstractions. I’ve earned a Certificate in Painting from the School of the Art Institute in Chicago and taken additional coursework there for more than twenty years. A working artist, graphic designer and art instructor, I’ve taught art to adults in the continuing education department of a small college and my local art league. I enjoy painting in oil, watercolor and pastel, from traditional portraiture through abstraction. In addition to artwork to hang in your home or office, I have designed large-scale liturgical fabric and stained glass works and had several works published. I enjoy working on commissions, where the pieces have personal significance to the owner. As the chair of the Art and Environment Ministry for my church for many years, I've designed large-scale liturgical fabric and stained glass works. Several of my pieces have been featured in publications by the North American Conference of Separated and Divorced Catholics, the Lutheran Church, University Hill Congregation and frequently by the Ministry and Liturgy Magazine. I am also the author of Energize Your Art Ministry.

Still She Grows

Approx. 37X25" on paper, framed. This original painting is charcoal, graphite, gesso and watercolor on high quality, thick gessoed paper.

Created in the style of Jim Dine - a process of drawing and erasing, redrawing, re-erasing, and so on for multiple iterations. Photos shown show the process of drawing and erasing.

This one was finished with gesso and pigment. While a frustrating process at first, it is actually quite fulfilling. Drawn from a live still life set up, the flowers grew over the week and the plants turned to and from the light while this still life was set up! The painting has captured the aliveness of the scene.

Do you know about the Japanese concept of shibui?

It’s about finding beauty in simplicity. It seems fitting in Winter when landscapes tend to be a little more understated and a quiet settles in after the big holiday season.

It can also be a decor concept. One meaningful artwork can bring a lot to the places you hold dear.

It can take time for an artwork to sink in.

The more you think about it, the more you notice.

Another trip around the sun can feel the same way. As the year settles behind you, certain things come into focus.

What became clearer for you this past year?

Take a peek at “Forever and Always" and see what it reveals.

We Never Surrender

This portrait shows a strong woman in my life who walked before and beside me for a lifetime. I was inspired by a host of old photographs on in crumbling black photo albums that have survived 100 years. To quote a poet and relative, Barbara Mackowiak, who divines an emotional story of our aging grandmother into her 90s perhaps saying: “I forget how to use the words. I watch conversations and great-grandchildren grow in my very hands. I hide things and forget them, and therefore it gets easier. I fall asleep during the news, and so it gets easier.”

We Never Surrender honors the legacy of my grandmother. Widowed less than five months after the birth of her 5th child, she survived two World Wars, rations, The Great Depression, 50 years day after day in a sweatshop sewing men's shoes so her children could eat. Her story lives on in how I meet life, productive, stalwart, I can do it - and that has passed to my daughters, and her grandchildren and now mine. We have her spirit and traditions, making our daily bread and getting it all done to meet another day.

This time of year, I always find myself wanting to refresh my space — not just by cleaning, but by adding little touches that make it feel elevated and more comfortable for the Winter ahead.

Artwork, like “Crucible of Faith,” has a way of transforming a room into somewhere a little more elevated because it's produced by a working artist.
