Highlights from the latest Rutherford County Library board meeting where four books were banned and removed from shelves.

The Rutherford County Library System is voting to remove "This Book is Gay" and "Let's Talk About It" from their shelves. Both books discuss q***r identity, sexuality and are great resources for q***r or questioning youth or adults.

The Murfreesboro City Council passed a "decency" ordinance after backlash was received from a BoroPride drag show. The ordinance allegedly "promotes public decency, maintains family-friendly environments in public places, and protects against harm to minors."

Murfreesboro's Vice Mayor Bill Shacklett raised concerns about this specific type of incident during the city council meeting. “I’m a person of faith…but I’m concerned what this says to the community about the value of personal freedom and personal choice."

Censorship is "the suppression...of any parts of books...that are considered obscene, politically unacceptable, or a threat to security. The Rutherford County Library System will be voting to remove the two books from their shelves on Monday, August 28th at 5 p.m. at the Linebaugh Public Library.

Library board meetings are OPEN to the public.
