Earlier today detectives from the Upper Peninsula Substance Enforcement Team (UPSET) conducted an investigation that resulted in the arrest of male suspect from White Pine, Michigan for charges relating to the distribution of crystal m**h and suspected fentanyl pills.

Detectives from UPSET and troopers from the Wakefield Post obtained information that a known drug dealer, who was currently on a delayed sentence from the Federal Bureau of Prisons, was suspected of receiving large amounts of crystal m**h and fentanyl pills. Detectives were able to obtain enough information to execute a search warrant at the suspects residence in White Pine, Michigan. During a search of the residence detectives arrested the suspect and seized approximately 25 grams of crystal m**h, over 130 pills, suspected of containing fentanyl, and evidence of drug distribution. The suspect was lodged at the Ontonagon County Jail.

No names or additional information is being released at this time since the investigation is ongoing.

Detectives were assisted by troopers from the Wakefield Post and Ontonagon Detachment, along with troopers and the K-9 Unit from the Calumet Post. Special Agents from Homeland Security Investigations and DNR officers also assisted in the investigation.

IMPORTANT NOTICE:
MUNISING PUBLIC SCHOOLS IS CLOSED TOMORROW (THURSDAY 3/23) AND FRIDAY (3/24).

Hello Mustang School Community

After an adrenaline pumping win for the Mustangs in the Boys' Quarterfinal Basketball Game last night, I had restless sleep due to the notion that we'd have important decisions to make in the morning. Therefore, with broad scale support from the Board of Education, and the Teacher's and Support Staff unions, I am reaching out to all of you to let you know that we have decided to close school down tomorrow (3/23) and Friday (3/24) for a variety of good reasons. This decision did not come easily as we know that the early closure is beneficial for many families and yet can be an imposition for others. However, the closure will put the district and community in great position to fully support the Boys' Basketball Team as it advances on it's historic journey to the Breslin Center as ambassadors for Munising at the state level and to ensure the district avoids potential loss of state funding due to low student attendance rates.

The current situation is that we have many students and families already gone for spring break and reports are that most buses are only at 50% ridership today. If our attendance numbers drop even more as an out flux of students leave to attend the game(s), we risk not meeting the 75% attendance threshold for full daily foundation payment from the state tomorrow, and especially on Friday. Combine that with the fact that we already have several teachers and key staff members scheduled to be absent from the district tomorrow and/or Friday for non-athletic related reasons and a deficit of substitutes, the loss of any additional staff members due to sickness over the next two days would only exacerbate our ability to staff classrooms with certified adults. Any additional absences of students and staff will compromise learning in the classrooms.

In closing tomorrow and Friday, we will only need to add one more day to our school calendar which extends the year from Thursday, June 8th to Friday, June 9th with the first half of that day with pupils in session and the second half of that day being teacher professional development time. We still have one snow day (forgiven time waiver day) left that we can use for inclement weather yet this spring if needed and not be required to return on June 12th. In case you were wondering, the Michigan Department of Education will not allow districts to use a forgiven time day to cover a sports related closure.

Please contact me or the building principals if you have any questions. For those families that this closure creates an imposition, I apologize on behalf of the district, and for those families and community members that are helped by this closure, I am glad that we could help.

In closing, please support the Boys' Basketball Team and the Munising School Community in whatever way that you can.....whether it be traveling to East Lansing to watch them play tomorrow and hopefully Saturday or watching them live online using the NFHS Network. If you have any game related questions, please contact Nicole Lasak at [email protected].

GO MUSTANGS!

Sincerely,
Michael J. Travis, Superintendent

The decision has been made to close M -28 from Kawbawgum Road in Marquette County to Alger County, this will be between Kawbawgum Rd (Marquette County and Westshore Dr in Alger co) due to no visibility. Alternate routes will be have to be sought. The Alger/Marquette County Road commissions have been trying to avoid closing this stretch of road, and there have been so many crashes and the visibility is nonexistent.
Motorists should use caution when taking the alternate route of M 94 through Alger county, however the road conditions are very treacherous along this route also.

Roam Media would also like to say US41 to US-2 from Trenary to Rapid River is a complete whiteout at this time.

On Thursday detectives from the Upper Peninsula Substance Enforcement Team (UPSET) conducted an investigation that resulted in the arrest of two female suspect from Chicago for trying to illegally obtaining a false prescription and resisting arrest.

Detectives from UPSET were notified by staff at Snyder’s pharmacy when two people were trying to obtain prescription medication from several different Snyder Pharmacies in the area. The suspects had a fraudulent prescription that was verified by the pharmacy and detectives.

On Friday detectives from UPSET and troopers from the Michigan State Police made contact with the suspects as they were leaving Snyder’s Pharmacy in Negaunee, Michigan. The suspects resisted arrest by locking their doors and not listening to the officer’s commands when ordered to exit the vehicle. They were eventually taken into custody and lodged at the Marquette County Jail on felony charges related to obtaining a fraudulent prescription and resisting arrest.

UPSET was assisted by the Michigan State Police Negaunee Post and coordinated the investigation with Ishpeming Police Department and Negaunee Police Department.
