Between the years 1838 and 1935, Mount Vernon had two newspapers: The Democratic Banner and The Republican News. During those 97 years, each newspaper went through several owners and name changes. But in 1935 the two newspapers merged, and on April 3, 1939 the name of the newspaper was changed to the Mount Vernon News. Since January 15, 1900, the Culbertson family has been the main owner of the Mo

unt Vernon News. Culbertson was the first in his family to become the publisher of the newspaper. Culbertson was publisher of the newspaper from 1900 until his death in 1941. His son George T. took over as publisher after the death of his father and continued in the position until his death in 1959. After the death of his father, George T. Culbertson Jr. took over the position until he retired in 1986. After working at the Mount Vernon News since 1979, William H. Culbertson became the fourth generation of his family to head the newspaper after his father’s retirement in 1986. Upon his sudden death of a heart attack in 1992, William Culbertson’s wife Kay H. Culbertson succeeded him and continues today in the position of Mount Vernon News publisher. Mrs. Culbertson began her career at Mount Vernon News in 1973 in the camera and plate room. From that job she moved on to become a press operator, production department manager, and then president and publisher of Progressive Communications Corporation.
